Finally!! Better Sound from the Radio

Those of you who have been on this board for the past month (should) know that I truly do love my car, with the exception of the radio. Finally, I did something about it this weekend. I know that my "modifications" pale in comparison to those that you all have done to your cars, however in time, I too can boast about my CAI, Headers, or Springs. Back to the topic on hand. Yesterday, I had two tweeters placed in that black triangle area in the front doors. They are Polk Tweeters. The technicians at Circuit city installed them in about 1 hour at a cost of 40 dollars. The speakers cost 89 dollars. They look absolutely factory installed, and sound incredible. The speakers protrude about 1.2 inches, however not in a ugly sort of way. The speakers are angled to your ear level. Anyhow, I am finally pleased with the car, and will be spending much more time in it just listening to the radio.

I've also been thinking about adding tweeters to car, but I have a few questions. Do you really notice anything by just adding tweeters? I heard you need to get components to notice the sound difference. How are the tweeters getting powered? I also want to find a way to get the tweeters flush w/the triangle pastic by the window. You have any pictures?

The speakers are not flush, however the fact that they protrude is not dissappointing as much as I thought. The technicians noted that the speakers cannot be mounted flush since there is not enough room behind the triangle to do so. As far as the sound is concerned, its 100 percent better. I listen to a variety of music, however whatever it may be, i enjoy hearing a good mix of treble and bass. The factory setup gives off too much bass. These tweeters brings it all into a good balance.

Again, I'll post pictures within the week

Hmm, I fairly happy with the stock radio, but they do not seem to provide enough treble for my taste.

Lauderdale TL, I think what you have done would work for me. I'd also like to see some pictures if you have a digital camera handy.

They did wire those directly to the front speakers? and if they did, where did they splice (if you know)?

Thanks

If you are considering adding tweeters, and/or replacing the door speakers, you might want to visit this thread of a few weeks ago:

To get a decent flat response after adding/replacing speakers, you need to bypass the BOSE equalizer. In the thread "allanc45" and I describe how to bypass the eq, and I have some pictures of the install (2nd page of thread).

...also, don't miss this thread where allanc45 was nice enough to scan the relevant electrical schematics and pinnouts from the Helms manual:

Wow, you added tweeters!! I think that the Bose system have TOO much treble and not enough bass. I'm going to remove my 6 1/2" BOSE subwoofer and put in an 8", along with 2 Bazooka tubes. I don't want incredibly loud high school base, but the stock system is definitely more treble then base.... at least that's my take on it. Adding those tweeters may not be a bad idea after I install more bass.... would probably balance everything out nicely. I'd like to see some pics too!!

I think I am going to do the same as J.B. I am going to replace the existing speakers with better speakers first and see what it sounds like.

I just installed new speakers w/ tweeters on the front, and the differences is incredible... and extra credit goes to the tweeters, having those at a higher level (the triangle piece) makes the music twice as good.

Lauderdale - did you get crossovers? cuz from what I heard is that without, tweeters won't last too long...

I have a really cool portable spectrum analyzer with calibrated microphone. i am going to sweep the stock system to measure its frequency response at different positions and report back.

I am also going to measure the noise sound level at the ear position of the driver, C-weighted to see how quiet the car is at 60 mph, idle, etc.
