Question A few ?'s from a soon to be 3.2TL owner.

This is my first post on this board so let me say HI

OK, hears the situation. I am seriously considering buying a friend of a friends 3.2TL. It is a silver '00 model with 23K miles and very well maintained. He is selling it for $22,000 but I think I can talk him down to 20K. The reason for the sell is the Type-S, so his gain is my gain

Here come the 20 Q's:

1) Is this a good deal, price, mileage, and all?

2) What, if any, are the most common problems with the 3.2TL?

3) Are there any regular maintenance concerns other than oil, alignment, etc.?

4) What are the performance numbers (i.e., Hp, Tq, 0-60, etc.)?

5) What can I expect as far as the after market is concerned?

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any and all answers. I am trying to get an understanding of this car, the good or the bad, before I buy it. Any help or pointers will be much appreciated.

Thanx.

1) Is this a good deal, price, mileage, and all?

Go to MS Carpoint or Edmunds. It'll give you a ball park on trade-in Vs. retail. I'd start at the trade-in price and work your way up. You said it's well maintained so it'll probably carry a little more.

2) What, if any, are the most common problems with the 3.2TL?
Some people have mentioned trans problems, but I think it's been on the rare side. Mostly rattles and such. As for the rattles, I think people notice them more 'cause the TL is so quiet inside.

3) Are there any regular maintenance concerns other than oil, alignment, etc.?
Nothing out of the ordinary, just follow the maintenance schedule in the manual. Be careful on what the dealers recommend since it seems as though they're charging hundreds of $$$ for maintenance, but when you look at the manual, all it recommends inspections

4) What are the performance numbers (i.e., Hp, Tq, 0-60, etc.)?
'00-'01 TLs are rated at 225HP & 216 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 times vary, but Car & Driver did a comparison test with a '00 TL and a number of other cars and the TL came on top barely edging out a 300M

5) What can I expect as far as the after market is concerned?

It seems as though most people have upgraded exhaust, intakes and springs. Look around

I love mine!

Good Luck!

I have a 2000 TL and here are the problems that I have, most of them are pretty common.

1. The Engine Check Light issue. The engine check light will pop up due to the ECU software bug, that will sometimes cause the uesless garage TCS to F up as well.

2. Brake rotor wrap, happens to bother 99 and 2000

3. tranny acting weird, mostly on 99, but few 00 model include me myself have problem shift from 2 to 3 sometimes

4. rattles everywhere to a point that you feel the car is annoying.

So, maybe you should double check on the histroy of the car before buying...
