FAQ: 06-07 AV6 Transmission 'Swap'
#161
Racer
I'm still in the planning phase and have a couple of questions regarding the swap.
I was thinking about buying a Harbor Freight low profile transmission jack to R&R the transmission. Once you break free the tranny from the engine, how do you remove it from the engine compartment? Through the wheelwell? Would the HF tranny jack be low enough to roll it out from underneath the vehicle?
I've never worked on an AT before and have read comments about making sure there is fluid in the torque converter before you re-install. Is it straight forward putting fluid in the torque converter and then installing the tranny? How much fluid? Once it's in, does it leak or spill while you're maneuvering the tranny into position? I've never done something like this, so I was wondering if someone might shed some light on this subject.
Many thanks in advance.

There is an o-ring on the input shaft of the transmission, so once you slide the torque converter on, there won't be anything leaking out when you're handling the transmission.

The torque converter that fits my TL is the HO-21. I'm told it's the same one in the Honda Odyssey. It isn't rubbing anymore but now I have a P0780 code and the transmission doesn't want to shift out of second before the D5 light comes on and the check engine light along with it. Anyone have any experience wi this?

P0780 = Mechanical problem in tranny's hydraulic system.
Chances are that either the shift control solenoid valve "A" or the A/T clutch pressure control "A & B" solenoid assembly set is malfunctioning. Clean the screens, apply power to valve to check and replace if necessary.

Was out on some of the Honda Accord forums and folks out there say the torque converter can be installed DRY.
Not going to take any chances and will fill the TC with fluid before installing.

I want to re-visit this just to be sure since I felt like a small slip in my transmission today (Bear in Mind I had the AV6 trans in my Garage for almost 2 years now).
What I have to Replace from my Current trans to the AV6:
1.- ATF Warmer
2.- Trans Harness
3.- Range Sensor
4.- VSA Holding Bracket
And that's it? I will re-use the AV6 ATF Filter since its cheaper.

soon to swap
First things first this is one of the best write ups I have read. Good job and thank you. I just bought a 2000 tl. Its got the much talked about codes two of which are the 740 and 730. As I read on my plan on trans fluid change has been stopped. I am sourcing an AV6 and will be swapping hopefully soon. My question is withing the third requirement. Third, get everything you need for the swap in advance! It makes it alot less brutal when you don't have to source a part or gasket in the middle of the job! Aside from buying the trans fluid and discussed optional parts what parts or gaskets are you talking about..
800 buck cant complain the car is in good shape.

^^^ Yeah, for under a $1000, it's worth doing. Less than locking into new car payments.
If you're replacing the tranny yourself, take some notes and pics along the way....if ya can.

"AV6" = '06>'07 Honda Accord V-6 with 5 speed AT.
It's basically an upgraded direct bolt-in replacement for our ailing 2nd Gen's problematic trannys.

Welcome Runger !!!
I'd suggest downloading a copy of the Factory Service Manual.
Perhaps try searching or maybe someone has a source for this ?
So, how did the "AV6" swap go for ya ? Any snags along the way ?

Here's what I found out yesterday. I found out that there were two different torque converters put in the 2000 year model TL. If you have the version I have the AV6 torque converter will not work for you. You will have to buy a new torque converter like your original in order to use this transmission. From what I understand, it's the revised/updated oil passageways that have been updated that are supposed to make the AV6 so much more reliable than the original. I tried using the AV6 and actually ruined a transmission because the AV6 torque converter was rubbing against the back of its case. Almost ruined this one too before I figured out what was going on. Ended up finding a brand new torque converter for $129.90 with no core charge. I put the torque converter into the trans today and I can already see there is more room. If it's enough, I don't know yet; I hope to find out tomorrow or the day after depending on whether or not I get the time to work on it; I promise to report back my findings as soon as I'm finished. More than likely it will be tomorrow. And yes, I'm sure I have the right transmission. I have the BAYA.
I'm a little confused by this.
Are you saying the 2000 motor is different? Are you putting an AV6 converter in your 2000 transmission? Why would an AV6 convertor not fit a 2000 TL motor?
I have a few questions for the masses.
Seems like I can find Ody transmissions a lot cheaper than the accord. I'm supposed to be looking for 2005-2006? Correct?
Besides the oil cooler difference, is there any difference in the swapping of parts on the tutorial posted here?
What drilling or mods are encountered with the Ody trans? I rerad that some have to drill out or tap something?
Lastly, I want a fresh convertor no matter what? I buy one for the accord tans, right? Ant brands to stay away from or brands you recommend?
I'm having this swap done next week, so I just want to be clear. Appreciate any insight!

Quickie question.
There's a shop near me called California Transmissions in San Diego that advertises rebuilt, with upgraded valve body, and a new TC for 1150 installed.
They claimed they have fixed the issues that cause our problems, namely the valve body. Can this be true?
I know it sounds too good to be true, but they have 5 star yelp reviews from all three of their shops.

Whats up everyone. I have a quick question. My 03 cl-s is slipping real bad. I bought a transmission yesterday that supposed to be from a 03 3.0 Accord. On the trans it says BAYA-5036742 3RAYAA2. I originally read that I was supposed to get a BAYA unit, now I'm reading that I need a 06-07. I'm confused. Will it work?

Welcome Jayspartanburg !!!
Your best bet is the newer '06>'07 AV6 with the updated design which has proven more reliable than the 2nd Gen TL's original trannys. Take the '03 Accord tranny back if ya don't want problems down the road. Check out the many past related threads on bolting in the "AV6" ('06>'07 Accord V6's 5 spd AT). It's well documented.

Thanks for replying 3.2TLc. I'm kind of in a jam and just need to get the car on the road. I hear your advise on newer trans and don't want you to think its falling on deaf ears, I just need something that will get me by for the time being. I'm going to be in about $500 with labor included. Am I still supposed to change the same stuff I would with the newer trans?
#183
3.2TLc I was hoping you would reply. According to a thread that you were a part of ( https://acurazine.com/forums/second-...8#post15125375 ) I felt comfortable buying what I assumed would be the right transmission.

"BAYA" = AV6 from '06>'07 Accord V-6.
Apparently you bought the "MAYA" earlier version which still has issues similar to our 2nd Gen TL's original trannys. Should bolt-in. But, the $500 may be better spent towards the newer "AV6" for durability.

Imports are not what I usually work on but I guess to help the next person that runs into the same posts/questions that I did I guess we can clarify some things? Is there a page where someone can enter a transmission tag number and get info on the year? A BAYA trans is made in the US, and MAYA in Japan? For the purpose of the AV6 swap, a pre 06 BAYA is considered a MAYA?
#186
While it can become a bit confusing, if the tranny's ID sticker says "BAYA" ..... then that's the preferred one. It's very possible that the '03 Accord which ya got the tranny from may have been replaced at some point, ya never really know. Sometimes, if ya don't actually see the donor car in person......a salvage yard will just run the interchange reference and give ya what they have.
But, a total of $500 for having the tranny installed isn't a bad price......and maybe worth trying to get ya by for the time being. If ya don't know the donor's mileage and condition, check things like the converter ...fluid ...solenoids ...filter ... etc.
Just put the tranny's side by side and follow the "AV6" swap threads for installing. Ya may get lucky !!!

Theres a Green plate on the trans with the VIN # put those numbers on carfax.com and it will tell you from what car it came out of.
You don't have to pay anything.

I ran the vin and it came back 03 Accord. I didn't notice it before but I believe all the bolts on the top side of the tranny are painted blue, so I'll take that as a good sign. Hope quality parts were used..

Hey let me know if you could use an extra hand. I'm in the Pittsburgh area as well. I haven't done this swap but I'd be more than happy to help and learn as I may have to do it myself in the future. Who knows how long my current tranny will last.

If the the white sticker has the letters RMK means it was factory rebuilt.
Also if it has the oil jet kit don't install it , Look for the 06-07 accord v6 trans.

Has anyone had a shop in NJ or Philly area do their AV6 swap? I started calling around to get a shop in line as I think my trans is likely not going to go too much further. I called a couple of Honda specialist places I knew as a well as a few I found on Google. Out of the 5 shops I called and tried to explain the best I could on how the 06/07 AV6 trans is a direct bolt in with some minor sensor and harness swap over, only one was luke warm to the idea. My one trusted shop said they would attempt it but don't have the bandwidth for an out of the box type install. The other 3 flat out told me it wouldn't work no matter how nicely I told them others have successfully done it and that I would bring in the detailed instructions from this thread. Anyways, no convincing some folks. The one shop that was luke warm to the idea (Carmine's in Cranfird NJ) wants to see the donor in person to match up. He stated they would charge $800 for a like for like swap, but wasn't sure how much the AV6 would be extra if they decided to tackle it. Never been to Carmines but they have pretty solid reviews for Honda repairs
So has anyone had a shop in NJ or around Philly do the swap and do it well? Price?
Thanks

Sometimes places like the big name shops and import specialists don't want to deal with this kinda swap.
They fear problems and the repercussions. IMO, talk to the salvage yard or a local independent tranny shop about the installation. They may be able to work with you if ya tell them that it is a direct "bolt-in" replacement. The minor things that need to be changed are well documented and easy enough to follow. Perhaps things like the PCM bothers some shops, IDK.
But, at the end of the day.....they may not be willling to offer ya the normal warranty on their work.

Yeah it's tough nowaday- most everyone just wants the plug and play type work. No one wants to do anything out of the norm. Just like body shops. They don't want anything non insurance related..finding a shop that will do actual rust repair or body work is hard these days.
Funny enough, the one yard I called showed that they did mechanical work as well. So when I asked if they would do the swap they said no and the proceeded on with they wouldn't warranty the trans niw either since it wouldn't be going into another accord..ha

10k mile check in:
Replaced the fluid once and used OEM honda fluid...still shifts butter smooth however I realized that with regular dex/merc the shifts were more harsh, car chirped a lot more between first and second and there definitely was a lot more torque steer with that fluid. As far as gear ratios they seem longer in the odyssey trans (good for boost or spray) however I did spank a evo 9, 350z, '14 535i
No complaints, however now contemplating a manual swap for more instant torque lol

So to be clear,
in the second step; removing filter assembly, and lines (#'s 11, 7, 22, 21, 10, 24, 12, 15, 26, 20, 6, 13, 14) is not necessary, right?
and I have an '02 TL Type-S, should be ignored?
Lastly, does bringing the wiring harness from the TL transmission to the AV6 require any electrical work (splicing wires/soldering)? or will the wiring harness connect like plug n' play?
