Fair market price - need help!!!

This morning on my way to work skid out of control and hit a telephone pole. I'm fine, but a car, most likely, is a total - will know that next week. Here is my question: as far as I know, insurance gives you a "fair market price" if your car is totaled. How this price is determined and how can I find it out? My car is 2000 TL with navi. I would appreciate any help!

Sorry you lost your ride...glad your OK.

Kelly Blue Book trade in price is around $10K and KBB retail is about $15
Real world $'s wil be lower....insurance companies look ar current retail $
Figure between 11-12K....more if the insu co is generous.

Let us know how they settle with you.

Thank you for reply, guys!!! Yeh, I've looked at KBB - for the very similar car it quoted retail price of $15,900 (in my area). Is that the number I should bring up when I talk to my insurence?

of course - KBB is a respected name and used my nearly everyone, so the more real knowledge you have (not what someone is selling it as in the paper) will only help you. Im sure they will have their own similar book with numbers in it, but at least you can compare and have some bargaining power if you need.

but I'm glad you are ok.

Bet it ran out in front of him, they tend to do that.

I don't want to be the first to post a request for pictures, though.

Sorry about your accident!

dunno if this will apply to you but if you're worried because u have payments to still make on the car....u should check if you have "Gap Insurance". I just purchased an 02 TL-S and was given the option to purchase this.

Gap Insurance will cover the difference if the amount the insurance company gives u does not cover the amount you have left on your loan. I paid $440 up front...well worth it as I got burned before....

Just an FYI...glad ur ok though....

Thank you all for your responses!!! Just one more thing - need your opinions ... I can drive my son's car (he is in college) for some time. It's a 1993 Altima and it's adequate as home-to-work car. Should I wait till TL AWD version comes out (fall 06?) or just go and buy current version?

It's always a mystery to me why, when kbb.com is available, people ask how much their car is worth on a site like this.

Do you need AWD? Do you want to buy the TL AWD when it first comes out? For me, I wouldn't. I'd get a deal on an '05.

Also, I wouldn't bring any number up to an insurance company until after they made an offer. A few years ago, I bought a used car for $2,000. Had a backfire through the carb, and it burned up. Totalled. Insurance company gave me $4,000.
