switch to another cd, switch back to the first cd, and try to eject again. While it is doing so, smack the side of the radio a few times. Works for me.
But yea, the oem headunit is screwed.

I was just looking up a similar problem. My '99 refuses to eject my cassette adapter, it shows the two little arrows pointing at each other and shows "error" . At first I thought it was a common problem caused by the adapter itself, so after I messed with it I made it eject, took it apart and made the little wheels inside able to rotate both ways which would have remedied the problem had it been the adapters fault. After putting it back in it read the same error. Am I screwed as well?

Try this....
Option #3 - Do what I did, no guarantee it'll work....
Pull the #9 20a fuse out of the passenger side fuse block (open the door, theres a pop panel in the side of the dash)- this will kill power to the radio, and when you put it back in the radio goes into 'reset mode', if you will, - turn it on, then it will cycle thru the cd rack, just eject whatever you have in there, if it allows you to.
Hopefully the cd in question is NOT a CD-R....., these units have big issues with the nanometers thicker platters..... You should really only put factory pressed ones in these inferior units....
Hope this helps.... if not.......

I smack the front face of the unit where the display is and load/unload slot with my palm. Right after, try to cycle through load button and/or different tray buttons. I find cold weather affects my head unit. Warmer temperature, less problem. Agree with not using CD-R's. Since I use radio more, not tempted to change to after market unit yet.
For me, this works better than smacking the side.
