Factory OEM Spoiler
Hey guys,
I picked up my TL-s last week and I bought it through a leasing company. Due to the backlog at the Dealer, the leasing company went out and had a factory OEM spoiler and tinted windows installed.
Now the problem is the weight of the trunk causes it to slam shut and not stay open. (It hit me in the head while I was loading groceries). The leasing company has told me that the dealer will not sell the stronger torsion springs seperately.
Is this true? What can I do? Can I increase the strength of the factory torsion bars or should I go to the dealer and have them install a complete new spoiler with torsion bars?
What are my options here....
Cheere,
John

I believe that the dealer should re-adjust the tension on the springs in the trunk to make them hold the trunk up. I believe they do this automatically (or they're supposed to) when you put a spoiler on.....

Go to the dealer and b*tch. It shouldn't be like that. That should be fixed under warranty.
Oh wait, did the dealer not do the work?

I recently spoke with my mechanic about the spoiler. He told me that when a spoiler is added they completely replace the springs with heavier duty one's that will support the weight of the spoiler. The springs for the spoiler are suppose to be included in the package.

I had my spoiler installed at the dealer. He told me that there were a lot of people having your problem. He said the non-factory spoilers were too heavy and the trunk was not opening. I don't know if this was a line or not but my trunk opens fine with the factory spoiler.

Go and check to see if there is a molded Acura logo on the bottom side of the spoiler. The factory OEM spoiler kit comes with two pieces of high spring-rate rods to offset the extra weight of the spoiler. When properly installed, the trunk lid should open and close in the same way as if the spoiler isn't there.
I suspect that the leasing company might have bought you an aftermarket OEM look-alike spoiler for about 1/3 to 1/4 the OEM price. Aftermarket spoilers do not come with any springs, let alone exact-fitting rods.
However, if this is the case and the company is not willing to talk, you can go to Acura parts and order a set of the stronger rods. I have done so for an Integra before. All you need is to find out the factory order code.

Oh, I forgot to mention. Please leave the spring rod installation to professionals. The spring rods are under high tension all the time. It almost took out my fingers last time when I tried to remove one.

Go back to the dealer, if it's an OEM spoiler, that should not happen!

No joy... The tensioner is already in the higher tension position. Any other ideas?
When you hit the trunk open, it doesn't even pop up at all.
