Expected tranny failure

Those of you who have been following the site know that I changed my tranny fluid at about 7000 miles in an attempt to avoid a possible tranny failure. Those of you who read the post also know that my fluid came out very dark (not burnt, but dark - even on the third refill/flush {using 2qt/flush}).

I just got back from my first long distance business trip where I drove about 700 miles (95% of it highway). On my way back from GA I noticed that, after stopping for gas, the car shifted a little weird/rough from 2->3.

After arriving back home and leaving the car overnight, I drove it this evening to find that it seems to be developing major problems. The car (driven from a cold start) will roughly start to "hunt" for gears. It will momentarily jump back and forth when it's switching gears.

This sounds too familiar after reading tranny failure posts...

I may be reporting a failure soon.....

Oh no.. Sorry to hear about this. I wonder if everyone who had tranny probs expereinced the dark fluid. My TL-S was one of the first. Will be 1 year old next month with over 12k on the clock. I changed the tranny fluid back at 7k and will be changing it again with my next oil change at about 14k next week after I get back from a roadtrip. Hopefully the fluid will look ok again.

Sorry to hear that you may be joining the club
I didn't think to check out the condition of the fluid before leaving it with the dealer so I can't help you there. But I can tell you that I did have the problem with the 2->3 shift.
I don't want to freak you out, but it took 25 days for me to get my car back. Apparently the dealer spent 23 of those days waiting for Acura/Honda to cough up a tranny. I hope this backorder problem is resolved if it turns out that you need a transplant as well.

After reading all these broken tranny posts over the last many months, I went through several mental states, first I was paranoid that it would happen to me. Second, I started babying the car to avoid a problem. I have spoken to a couple of dealers who say they haven't heard of any (not that I believe them) and I have noticed that there are no Canadian cars with tranny problems on this forum. Anyway I have reached the point where I am saying screw it, if it happens I get it fixed and then dump the car.

Do your trannies make a lot of noise when shifting from drive-nuetral-reverse-park?

I hear a lot of clanging when its shifted. Sound can only be heard from outside the car. This is compared to my Nissan that make no noise when shifting to park.

by clanging I mean drive-nuetral (clang) nuetral-reverse (clang) reverse-park (clang).

Other than that it seem fine. Have no problems while driving.

You know what's weird? Now that it is winter, there have not been any (reported to this board) TL-S tranny failures. I think Yoyodyne was the last one. I wonder if they are gone for good, or if the warmer months ahead will bring a few more. (I know that we have members in "warmer" climates like TX, but there has not been a Canadian failure either)

But does it not seem odd that for a while they were coming in fast and furious, then all of a sudden not a single reprted dead tranny?

H-m-m-m-m-m.

Jon,

I thought the same thing. I've just been waiting for more to start popping up. Do you think warmer weather is somehow taking a toll on the trannies?

Its been 4 month since I bought my TL-S. This car is sooo awsome but! Cry... Yes i hear it every time i go from Park to Rev to D5 back to Rev then to Park. I have been to the dealer many time but they deny such a problem and says that i am hearing things. Its funny how many TL-S don't act up when it is at the dealer and the minute i drive off the dealers lot. It gets all crazy with that clang sound. Sigh... when are they going to recall this issue?

Hi all,

I'm a Canadian TLS owner, and so far haven't (touchwood) haven't had any problems with the tranny yet. Some occassional engine surges at full stop at the light, but I hear that is normal for the TLS.

Just want to know if any Canadian TLS owners have had any tranny problems.

Thanks,

InspireS

My tranny just went out this past Friday. Check engine light, VSA and ! lights stayed on. Sometimes won't go in gear at all, not even when I switched to E-Shift. I was on an incline road and the car rolled back while in D5. Purchased the car in Sep 01, one day after Sep 11. The car was made the week before in Ohio. Anyone else having tranny prob ? How long did it take to get a new one ?

Hey SilkkTypeS,

When your car rolled back in D5 when on an incline did you have the accelerator pushed down?

Its my understanding that these transmissions will roll back on inclines in Drive if one lets go of the brake and does not depress the accelerator.

Well group add me to the new tranny list. Just got the word yesterday that at 28,950 mine is shot. The preventitive flushes (at 10k and 20k) apparently had no effect. The fluid today looks like it is brand new. Aside from shifting reluctantly from second to third it makes a high pitched whining sound. I seldom use the SS mode and have never raced or tried to see if the car really can do 0-60 in 6 seconds. So the question that Acura is looking into for me is : Is the relacement exactly the same as the original ? If it is then I am very suspect that this will happen again.

My manufacture date was March

This kinda shoots the "contaminated fluid" theory all to hell. Looks like if it's going to happen to you, it's going to happen regardless of how you drive or what you do to prevent it.

It's a tranny prob, got confirmation from the service dept. The car rolled back in D5 while I'm on the accelerator, won't engage in gear at all. Also I noticed clang noises starting a few months ago while shifting from Reverse to Drive and vice versa. Is this tranny problem only happening on the 02 Type S and not the regular TL ?
