Exhaust resonator removal

in the old threads the pics dont work.. so im posting this up again

i have stock exhuast on my 99 TL-P and i was wondering wich resonators are the ones that you can remove for the more deeper growling noise..
i've heard people taking one or both.. which one is it?

if you have pics please post..

I thought our car has 1 resonator and 1 premuffler? the resonator is the can and premuffler is the oval. I don't know about deepening the exhaust note with teh stock pipe, but I heard removing resonators just makes it louder.

Haha you doing exhaust tomorrow too? I'm doing custom piping with a single 18" resonator. Well. after the 2liter can, there's a oval muffler before it splits to a Y and get's to your 2 large mufflers in teh back. That oval thing is the premuffler, acting as a resonator. One guy I know removed both of those resonators is on this forum aaron or something. You might wanna ask him. He just did an exhaust job recently so search for his thread.

Custom piping is dirt cheap... i remember around $21 for piping.. install should be 75-150 bux if you provide other parts (mufflers and what not).

I'm going to muffler shop tomorrow, but if my research has been correct, the resonator (2 liter thing) is the one that removes the higher pitched (raspy) sound, so my best bet is to rid the pipe of the premuffler (oval). The problem is I'm not sure so I can ask for you tomorrow, but you wanting to do it tomorrow doesn't help things LOL. When do you start the project? I am going to be at Michael's Mufflers around 8:00 and should be done in 1-1.5 hours. So I can post here what I find out from mechanic before 12:00pm.

Good news... it would appear I am right about removing the premuffler (oval)

04-05 TL's have a problem of being more raspy and less deep than our TL-S'... I asked the guy with magnaflows this personally, he told me I shouldn't have a problem. However the description of the OEM piping is accurate. From the cat. converter and back, it's in order of resonator, premuffler, y-spit, and then 2 mufflers. Good luck on your research.

so im guessing the "PRE MUFFLER" is the one i need to get removed..

haha yeah, I guess that's the one. He's the exhaust setup I'm copying since we both are after the same V8 Throaty sound which is very deep.

BOTH if you are keeping the stock exhaust, the big one is what makes the most difference. i have both mine removed. i need the quiet tip inserts for my comptech because of it (until the weekend when i have fun)

if your keeping your stock mufflers, i reccomend you remove both. when i had my stocks i took both out and it still didnt make that much of a difference. it gives a nice deep growl noise at lower RPMS which is great..

i dont know if removing just one would do much at all. and you'll be pretty disappointed if you take a resonator off, then weld a new pipe on there and not get a big difference out of it.

i just put in an 18 inch resonator today because i just got Magnaflows on my car, and with no resonators, DAMN that thing freakin sets alarms. but now it has this awesome growling grunting sound that i never heard before and it sounds AWESOME!!!! i'll have vids up on my last thread tomorrow. (Magnaflows Installed)

if your removing 1 you might as well remove both. tell them you want new pipe from the cat to the y. the 3 foot straight section leading up to the Y is ovaled shape and has to be somewhat restrictive.
if you remove just the small 1 youwont notice a difference in sound. the big one does all the work, but you might as well get rid of restriction

if they are going to do from the cat to the Y thats not bad. most of teh 50 bucks you hear is just a small section of pipe where teh resonator was

hey guys! i just installed my 22 inch resonator on there from Dynomax.

the thing still is pretty loud but it got rid of the metal rattling plus the inside cabin droning is barely there. no more headaches and no more rice sound. all low grunt noises, although the camera didnt get the real in person sound but its close.. i just went out and took a sound clip of it so dont mind the darkness.

here are the links.
