exhaust resonator removal
ive been searching for a DIY on the removal of the exhaust resonator. i want my car to sound alittle bit louder, deeper than it already is. but i dont really want to keep spending so much on my car. i have to pay for college and everything else. does anyone know how to remove it. i know i have to get it on a lift, and i know where i can do that. but where exactly is the resonator and what's the easiest, best way to get it out?

well.. our cars already have pretty nice freely flowing exhausts so it doesnt really do much for better flow.. although it should, but its not really for performancewise i guess.. more for just the sound.

huh.. the thing is, i have proper cutting tools and i have a friend that has experience in welding.. but if it doesnt sound that great than there's no point of doing it.. but isnt a CL different from the TL? like the width of the Y-Pipe, downpipe and everything else? wouldnt they have a different sound since they got wider pipes causing it to get louder noise..

as for doing it your self it would be best to let a muffler shop cut it off and weld in a new piece but you could always cut it out your self, have a muffler shop cut you a piece of pipe and flare both ends and clamp it on too.
now if you have a aftermarket exhaust i would do this mod with caution, because it will make the exhaust alot louder. the TL with comptech exhaust and this mod sounds nice (not like a civic with a fart can) but the resonance inside the car can get over welming at times, unless you have the quiet tip inserts

you can swapped all the pipes with a wider pipes, more flow and more hp and more sound
but that is not cheap thou, like 200-300 dollars including labour

One on the right for me
Several ways to go about doing this. Easiest, of course, is to get an exhaust shop to do it (my shop charges 35 for removal of a resonator). Second, you can cut out the resonator yourself and then get some straight pipe with an inside diameter slightly larger than the outside diameter of the exhaust and slip it over, then use clamps (make sure to get them tight). You can also attempt to do it yourself if you have a welder, although its a pain in the ass to weld if you are not standing under the car and your welds will probably look like shit. Be careful when removing the resonator because that will give the car a weird tone...maybe louder but not necessarily deeper (and if it does turn out to be deeper, it will be raspy). In the roughly 300 cars I have removed resonators on, the only consistant thing was the tone was not as smooth or mellow...some people like that, personally i dont.

wow.. alot of comments. thanks for your inputs. the thing is i really dont want to get an aftermarket exhaust. i just want it to sound alittle bit louder. ive heard cars with just exhausts on and it just sounds too beastly for an acuraTL. just want alittle bit of that sports feel when listening to my car accelerate. well, i guess we'll just have to see what happens when i take it off. probably this saturday. and i'll tell you how it goes. since most of you guys said it wont make much of a difference with jsut the OEM mufflers i guess there's nothing to lose, right? thanks again

you can play with the resonators...I mean there are 2 of them, try different combos. or get a Magnaflow resonator and try that, there are all sorts of different lengths you could try also.
