Error code P1709...please help

I have a 2000 3.2 TL w/ approximately 170,000 miles on it. D5 flashed for a few minutes and the check engine light came on until I turned the car off and restarted it but the check engine light remained on. I just got an error code of P1709 (Manufacturer control transmission) from Advanced auto. What does this code mean? Is my car safe to drive at highway speeds? Is it safe to drive at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your Gear Selection Switch is a fault. There is a technique that you can check with the key turned to ON, not starting the engine, shift the gear from Park to other gears to determine the condition of the GSS condition. I don't remember exactly in details.
