Engine and Tranny Removal

Hey guys,

I was looking through the service manual, and it shows how to remove the engine from the bottom. After some searching on the board, it seems that taking it from the top is much easier. I just needed to know some basics about this.

Should I disconnect the tranny from the engine when taking it out, or just take out both together? What about when putting it back?

Should I take the tranny out first?

What I'm planning on is:
-Disconnect engine from tranny
-Pull engine
-Pull tranny
--
-Mate 6spd with engine outside
-Drop both in together

^Will this work?

You can drop the subframe with the engine and trans on it. Just means you gotta disconnect pretty much everything. Or you can hang up the engine, drop the subframe, then take the transmission out the bottom with a jack. That's the most common way its done.

Looks like he removed the transmission first, and then removed the engine. Don't know how he did that... Doesn't look like there's enough room

Yes it is, You just have to Remove the Subframe Beam ARM the one with the Transmission Mount!!! After Removing Axles and Etc....
Know this cuz I had to Install my Rebuilt Tranny is alot easier than Removing Both (Engine + Trans) From Top.

Once you got the Trans out, Then Remove the Engine From the TOP and do: Engine Mounts, T-Belt Job, Headers.. Pretty much all the Hard Stuff to Change with the Engine Installed....

Hmm looks like freeaTLast was able to pull the engine+trans out from the top. He never touched the subframe. Guess I'll try out my options when I get there. If anyone else has experience doing this, plz chime in. Greatly appreciated.

Although I'm sure it's very possible (as well as much longer) to remove the engine/trans through to top. Acura's official service and repair manual says to remove both from the bottom...taking approx 15.1hrs. Of course this would be for those with the luxury of having a lift inside their home garage! A very close friend of mine who works nearby my shop that's been a local mechanic here in Dallas has been removing engines/trans from beneath the car for his entire 15 year span in a shop WITHOUT a lift. How? He says (holding his hand about 3.5 feet up) "All you have to do is get creative with a jack and jack stands and get the car about this high"!

Although I've never seen him do this, I can say I'm certain he has NO lift. :-)

^ 15 hours i can do it in my garage without a lift in about 2.5-3

You can pull both out the top. You WILL need a leveler so that you can adjust the angle on it as you raise it.

YESS. I can get an engine lift and leveler cheap enough from harbor freight. This makes the swap so much easier.

Labor times are advantageous for techs, especially ones with talent and experience. Sometimes you laugh at the times that are quoted in the books because they're so inaccurate.

Don't forget about the movie break as well...gotta keep the wifey happy when working on ur car for that long.

Broken down we have:
1. Bring car into garage
2. Pop the hood
3. Break for beer and lunch
4. Finishing opening hood by actually lifting it up
5. Start movie with wifey (but watch guy movie)
6. Replace engine/trans (on movie commercial break)
7. Finish movie with happy ending (and give wife happy ending too)

Sound about right?

yes and yes.... and just to make sure, there's an inspection plate at the bottom that comes off and you turn the crank shaft and take out all the small 10mm bolts..... those are the torque converter bolts right?

Are you sure you removed the right bolts. I ask because in one case someone posted
on an Acura Legend forum that they couldn't get the transmission to come out and it turned out they had removed the bolts between the case halves not the engine to transmission bolts.

This video shows removing the transmission on a similar Acura model.

I assume the engine is somehow supported from above!

Hello all, can anyone help me please

I'm in the process of removing the tranny out from my 02 tl's but facing difficulties of removing couple bolts from the tranny to the engine.

I've used breaker bar and many other way but the bolt will not loosen, one near the front motor mount location and the other near the aft warmer.

This one near the front motor mount, impossible for me to break it loose

Same for this one, near the aft warmer

^ You will have to break it loose.... Don't get scared of stripping those bolts, they will hold any kind of force you can throw at them with your hands.

I actually removed all mine with an Air Tool no issues.

The bolts that go into the tranny case strip easily. Well actually, the casing strips out, the bolts are too strong to strip.

You can clean up the threads and hope it goes back in properly.

Yeah, the bolts is not stripped but the thread casing on the engine is, was thinking about cleaning the bolts and install it back in and hoping for the best, or trying to do a helixcoil.
