Dual Stage Intake Manifold Question...
According to what I've heard, the TL-S/CL-S gains horsepower becuase of its dual stage intake manifold. Basically at 3500rpm a trio of butterfly valves open. However, over on the CL board people have been posting that an actuator has been failing, thus leaving the intake manifold at one stage. Does this electronically controlled actuator control/open the three butterfly valves?

one butterfly valve opens at 3800...our horsepower gain over the premium models is only partially achieved by this in addition higher comression higher fuel cut /redline and perhaps a couple other things im forgetting

IMRC
The IMRC (Intake Manifold Runner Control) actuator is the "actuator" they are talking about on the CLS forum. When VTEC kicks in, the engine benefits from not only the more aggressive cam profile, but also by the increased intake runner volume afforded by opening the IMRC butterfly "valves" between the intake runners.
The actuator is the greenish colored unit mounted just above and behind the rear valve cover on your Type S. According to the CLS guys you should be able to see it actuate when you get the motor up to about 3800 RPM.
As TypeR mentioned, this is only partially responsible for the extra HP gain on the TypeS. However, since the TypeS engine is tuned to take advantage of what the IMRC offers, it will suffer noticeably if the IMRC is not functioning properly.
