Post Doesn't 32 PSI on the tires look really flat?

What are the reprocussions if i pumped the tires from the recommended 32PSI to something like 40PSI or 44 PSI? the front tires at 32 PSI look totally deflated and even when the tires are 38PSI, they still look like they are 32 PSI. What would changing the PSI to 40-44PSI do to the car? save gas, better acceleration, softer suspension?

What's the max pressure your tire can hold? My Toyo 225/40/18 max out at 50psi. So I have 40psi in all four of them. 44psi sounds a bit too much but check your tire max.

I'm not sure if you want to over inflate your tires too much to save gas. The middle of part of your tire tread will wear out faster if you over inflate.

Yes it does look flat, but when you drive long distances or on a hot day with hot pavement, the air inside the tire will heat up and expand. approx 3 psi more when it is hot.

If you put too much air in the tire, your ride will actually be rougher. Not only that, you will get uneven tire wear at the middle of the tire.

You could probably go 34-37 and be okay. I wouldn't put anything more than that on stock tires. But if you get aftermarket ones, you should follow what they recommend.

I have my stockers at 34 psi when cold.

I, like so many others, had my tires inflated to 40psi when i took delivery from the dealership, because they forgot to deflate them to the recommended 32psi after unloading it from the train/truck. Currently, i run mine at 35psi cold, but down here in Orlando, the road gets really hot, and I'm probably going to lower them to 33psi next time i get a chance, to soften the ride a tad.

yea...my front ones look flat too. i used my tire gauge, and it read 32 PSI on the dot. i wanted to add 2 PSI, but thought twice about it and left it alone.

Yeah, they do look flat. The other day my front tires looked really low, like maybe they picked up a nail or something. Hung the gauge on them and they were both at 35. Go figure.

According to the SAE, tire pressures are generally set as a compromise of all the following factors:
1) safety - too soft and sidewallflexing increases heat and possibiulity of thermal induced failure
2) gas mileage
3) ride
4) impact tolerance - too stiff and possibility of tire and wheel damage
5) interaction with suspension settings - too high PSI can reduce roadholding since bump-steer and rear bump-hop can actually unsettle a smooth line through a corner
6)tire wear
7) interaction with active safety devices including VSA

Cool

I've just measured my stock tires and they're all set at 35 psi. I have to admit the front tires look a bit flat but the ride quality is excellent. I suggest that you go up to 35 for a week and see whether you notice any improvement in your ride.

The reason is that the rim width, 6.5", is too narrow for the oem 215/50 series tires. Lower profile tires need wider rims even though the tire width stays the same.

The bulge on the tire wouldn't look as bad if it is mounted on a 7" or 7.5" rims.

One thing you definitely do NOT want to do is to put more pressure in the tire than is listed on its side wall - that's asking for trouble.

32 when cold - not driven for at least 4 hours. In the winter you have to put in more air because the pressure drops and in the summer you have to release some air because the pressure increases. In May or June in NY I release some air and in Nov.- Dec. I put it back in.

WOODMAN made some good points. its during the winter temps that you really have to keep on eye on the air pressure

its better to be higher, than lower (to a degree)

the front tires look flat because our stupid cars have terrible weight distribution. 2nd gen tls have 62% of the weight in the front

bmws have almost a 50/50 balance

Cool

The first time I set my tire pressures I thought I made a mistake, but after several re-checks, it was in fact, the tires look flat!!! I set the pressure(all 4 tires)at 33, and the ride is supportive, but not harsh...
