Question Does a whining tranny mean the end is near?

Hi everyone,
I know there are a fair number of people on this forum that have had extremely unfortunate transmission problems. So, I realize that my post might mean there's an impending transmission failure, but I'd like to know if maybe I'm reading too much into something.

My transmission whines. The higher the RPM (while driving only), the higher pitch the whine gets. I'm almost certain it's the tranny because it doesn't happen while parked. I also shifted into Neutral today on the highway out of curiosity and the second I did, the whine went away.

So, here's my question. Does this necessarily mean that the tranny's going to go on me? Or, might a fluid change take care of the problem?

I will have Acura look at it at some point, but just can't anytime soon -- so I appreciate your input! Thanks.

uumm.. im not a total expert on this, but i dont think "whinging" is enough of a description for us to justify what it exactly is. for all i know, whining is usually the sound you get when your power steering isnt working properly or it doesnt have sufficient amount of fluid.

i never had a whining noise before my tranny died. mostly just poor shifts and dash lighting up like a christmas tree.

but then again, you did mention that the whining noise goes away on nuetral. does it make anny noises when youre in park and you turn the wheel?

Thanks -- I forgot to mention that it's shifting very nicely - no problems from 2nd to 3rd, no real delay in shifting from park to reverse, etc.

No noises in park and turning the wheel, to answer your question.

hmm, then i dont know what else to say. if the tranny is shifting like its supposed to i doubt the tranny is actually dying. you might wanna check all your fluids to see if all of them are filled properly. if thats not the case, try a mechanic or go to acura.. but i much rather talk to a trusted mechanic than going to acura service. they might call some BS and charge you for unnessacary fix-ups

That was one of the main reasons the shop foreman at Acura said that he wanted too replace mine.

i had the same problem. the techs gave me 2 options:

1. let them disassemble the tranny and try to find the problem, which could have potentially taken 1 day to 3 weeks.

OR

2. let them replace the tranny with a reman in a day.

i opted for #2 myself. so unfortunately i don't know what the issue was.
