Do I really need struts/shocks?
99 Tl. I went in for a brake inspection and I need new front brake pads and rotors which was expected. They also recommended new struts? I have never replaced them. Have owned the car 10 years.

Yeah, as Skirmich advised.....the originals served well. If ya plan on keeping the car for awhile longer,
it'll give ya a better ride. Check out the suspension and steering components while it's on the rack.
It's best to catch things before they cause other issues.

181k. Thanks for the feedback...Interesting I went in for a brake inspection and was advised to replace air filter, wipers, struts, and transmission oil in addition to front brake and rotors. Regardless, I will get all of these done (it wasn't the stealership)

Hey Bigcocoon, while it may not of been the stealership....ya gotta watch some of the specialty chain stores which like to pad up profits.
With some simple hand tools, you or a friend could easily do the general basics. The tranny fluid is only to be a drain & fill with Honda DW1 fluid. Flushing is not recommended !
Brakes are not really difficult, but struts are better left to the pro. These shops also like to charge full retail for the parts used, more padding !

Quality with all things Cheap is Always to be Desired...
I Would not use anything less than KYB for Struts OEM Replacement and For Suspension parts: MOOG and EIBACH Only..

My 2002 TL Type S has 195K miles on it and it still rides very smooth. When I had my last round of brake work performed by the dealership, the service manager told me that the shocks/struts of the TL were designed to last for the life of the car. I was surprised that he wasn't trying to upsell me.
I have since swapped out rotors/pads to non-Acura parts due to the history of poor performing Acura OEM rotors (previous sets warped at 15K miles), and had the suspension checked at that time. No leaks and everything working fine.
Am I just lucky? When the time comes, what is the recommended brand of struts? This might be an example of the OEM Acura product being the best.

"Last the Life of the Car" Jesus did Acura made a HUGE Breaktrough Improvement in Strut Design we are not aware of?
or Perhaps they tought once the Trans crap out its the end of the Life of the Car?
I Find that Statement Funny, I bet not even a Buggati Veyron Struts/Shocks will last more than 5 years (Being Electromagnetic ohh Yeah and Also Expensive as Fuuuuu).
Please get yourself new Shocks and Be AMAZED on how much the Ride Improvement is... KYB is the Recommended OEM strut replacement.
I would not Ride Nitrogen Filled Struts more than 50K IMO.. Once Nitrogen leaves the building is all back to be your Old´good Oil Only Filled Shock which works but the ride is not very Luxurius at all.

Shitty trannys and brakes, compared to lifetime struts would lead me to believe that the service manager is on crack !!!!

I agree it's time to replace them. Any recommendations as to a good set that won't break the bank, but still offer good performance and a smooth ride? Is KYB the preferred choice?

I actually just replaced mine because I found out I had bad boots on both CV axles and because I had to replace both of them I figured I would do the struts at the same time, along with other suspension parts. I went with KYB from "Auto Parts Warehouse" and got a good deal.
I noticed a slight difference in ride, but I can't say its night and day because I did replace upper and lower control arms, lower ball joints, sway bar links, tie rod ends and both tranny mounts all at the same time. I have 150k on mine.

KYB GR-2's are good struts. I've been on these since 2006, maybe 60,000k? I'll get around to replacing them with something better later.

Not a big fan of the kyb's. The rears are soft and tend to give the back a little extra bounce over expansion joints-just like the stockers. The fronts are more compliant than the originals and dialed out a bit of understeer but became harsh after 50k so I swapped those out for Tokico blues.
Love them and after 80k are still working great and the car is now very well balanced with a neutral drift when pushed.

99 Acura 3.2TL Drives bouncing. Bought shocks. Do I really need shocks with struts?
I bought a 1999 Acura 3.2TL from an auction 2 years ago. About 8 months ago, the ride seemed less smooth. Now, I’m really concerned and I was advised by a street mechanic who replaced my tie rods 4 months ago that the struts needed replacing. Yesterday I called a parts place to request struts. When I picked up the struts, the box label said shocks. I bought KYB Gas Shock Absorbers (Excel-G)drove the car to a mechanic who said shocks with struts are more expensive and he said would be better to buy the whole assembly. He also said for $85, he would install the shocks that I bought without the coil part. I don’t know what to think of this advise. I am a woman, I don’t have money to waste unnecessarily and I don’t know crap about cars. Also, this morning I hit a really deep pothole and noticed fluid leaking from one side next to the front passenger side of my car.
Help!

You've got the right parts. Most will agree that you've picked up the struts (our vehicles don't use shocks) that will yield closest to OEM ride quality.
About the springs: unless your springs have been damaged (very very slim chance) don't get new springs, stay with what you have and just replace the struts.
About your mechanic: it is very likely that he wants to get the job done for as little effort as possible i.e. less work for same pay and will obviously suggest something that will make it easier for him, but possibly at the cost of a different ride quality (and in this case, you having to return something you already bought).
If he doesn't want to install the shocks; I would take my business elsewhere...
About your pothole: any leaking fluid is bad. Is there anyone at home who can inspect it? I wouldn't drive it anywhere until it's known what was leaking.
