Do the 2001 cupholders really fit on 2000 TLs?

Hellloooo,

Been out of the loop for a while... damn, must have been about three months now. Been studying for boards, which I took a couple weeks ago. Nice to see a lot of changes with the board, as well as with the home page!

Hopefully, I can start keeping up with things again! I have a question about the cupholders, which I read stuff about before I went MIA. I just picked up the 2001 cupholder for my 2000 TL today. I've been trying to fit it in, and it doesn't seem like it fits. And no matter what I do, I can't close the cover so the cupholders are covered... am I missing somethign here, or have people just accepted this fact yet sacrificed fit and closeability for the added depths of the cupholders?

Thanks,
UCLAtl

welcome back, and you need to clip of some tab (im not sure which one cause i don't have them but that's what was said earlier). just use a nail clipper and it'll take 2 sec. hope that helps,

there are 2 little tabs you need to clip off

I believe they are towards the back of the car when the holder in installed.

the cupholder will fit perfect after that and the doors will open close without forcing them, just like they did before.

Even without clipping the tabs the cupholder fits in my 99 with the doors closed. It's a tight fit pushing it in but once it's there it works great.

I have posted along with others about this topic.
The part number you need is #77237-sok-a02 This is the 2001 TL cupholder assembly. This part should cost between $5-$9 it will fit in the cup holder slot for the 99-00 TL. The 2 plastic tabs that need to be trimmed off are located on the front part of the new insert holder.
I came up with the nail clipper idea because I did not have a hobby knife like everbody else was using. The clippers work fine takes all of 2 seconds & the doors will open & close like normal. I read that somepeople don't like the holders on 2001 & 2002 models. This little cheap part is a big improvement for people with 1999 & 2000 models.

Okay, figured it out!! I had the cupholder in backwards!! I thought the tabs were supposed to be in the back, but they are actually in the front. Actually, you don't need to clip off the tabs to have the cupholder fit and the doors shut. It's just a matter of aesthetics. Without the tabs, it looks more flush, but for others that don't care as much (or are too lazy)... it'll still fit fine with the tabs.

Geez, pretty pathetic that I couldn't even get the cupholder in the right way... glad that I went into medicine and not engineering!! :o

The doors will shut fine but when you push the button for them to open all the way they get stuck. They will open but not fully open like with the original part. When I replaced my insert this is what it did. When you trim off the tabs you will not see that part of the holder insert. This will allow the part to fit down in the hole better. This was the problem for many others so that is why they trimmed off the tabs.

Yep..... they fit great, and you don't really have to trim the two clip except that the door do get stuck when you try to open them...

Okay, the 01-02 cupholder have a deeper socket. The 99-00 cup holder are like ****..........

yea, i ran into the same problem. its because its 80 bucks for the whole cupholder kit, but only 5 or 8 for just the bottom part of the cupholder. just say you don't want the whole thing, just the bottom insert.
