Disappointed New/Used Acura TL Owner

I just purchased an 99 Acura TL with 69K for miles for $12,700. The vehicle is in excellent condition, the previous owner really took care of the vehicle. I only road tested the vehicle for 15 minutes. After purchasing the vehicle and driving for a week, I don't like the ride. I have owned 5 Honda Accords and the ride is much better. I traded in a leased 04 Accord Lx with 6,200 miles. I tried to get the 04 Accord back, but it's too late. What do you guys/gals recommend that I do to the Acura to get a 'smoother' ride.

Thanks,

JG

The Ride

The Acura does not have a smooth ride. I feel all of the bumps on the road. According to the serviceperson at Acura of Louisville, he told me that an Acura TL is not going to have the same ride as an Accord. He also said that the TL has a 'sportier' suspension.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will have to get used to driving the Acura TL. I always thought that the Acura TL and RL would have the same ride. I rode in my friends RL a couple of years ago and the ride was very smooth.

FYI TL & RL aren't the same car.

BTW, I drove my dad's 02 Accord V6 and compare to my TL-S, stock for stock, the ride quality is more supple, if not similar.

the RL and TL are completely different beasts. the tl is a very sporty car (for a fwd sedan)

I am going to take the TL into the local Acura dealer for some open recall repairs on the vehicle, I am going to have the service department perform a safety check on the TL. I have a 30 day warranty from CarMax, so if something is wrong with the suspension they will have to repair it. From the posts, I think something is wrong with the suspension or the shocks. I appreciate the posts from the members of this forum.

well....if this helps at all....my 03 TL-S came with the sucky azz michelin tires.i felt EVERY BUMP...after i changed them for sumitomos, the ride was MUCH BETTER......even with those cheap tires....i'd get pirellis but i don't think higher price would mean more comfort....

....maybe it's the suspension?...new shocks?...springs?...it IS a 6 yr old car...70 k seems early though...

That's what I would suggest, it does''t sound like your tL is riding right. If the suspension isn't better than your accord or if the suspension feels roughm there must be something wrong, I get compliments on the smooth ride and my car is lowered...

I cant see someone upset with the TLs suspensions, unless they are used to the old Air Bag Suspension my 87 Lincon Continential..

the 99 had pretty stiff suspension. its supposed to be like that. when the 2000 model came it, they gave it a softer suspension and did some stuff to it to and it got .5 seconds faster to 60mph. but yeah, the handling IMO the 99 is alot better, especially on the corners. i have a 99 and an 03. i actually like the 99 beetter, just because its more fun with the stiffer suspensions. the accord comes with extremely soft suspensions. i drove my friend's accord around and the cornering isnt that great. but its more of an economical family sedan. not a sports lux sedan. dont worry, you'll start breaking into it soon. it took me a few days, and now i love it! that's why we have two of them!!!

I forgot to mention that the TL has a fairly new set of Yokohama Avid H4 tires.

here is something that seems simple but you should try it.

Check your tire pressure! the lower it is, the smoother the ride, plus your shocks might be worn out. (dont go below 31 psi)

and remember, it is a sports sedan, you will get use to it, and eventually appriciate it.

make sure your tire PSI is between 32 and 34 for the best ride (if you have stock tires)

Whether a ride is good or bad is a subjective issue, but I get to ride in a number of different company cars, from mid-sized (Impala) to full size (Crown Vic) and my TL has the best ride of them all. The TL doesn't wallow like the Impala or Crown Vic and it's not as harsh as my wife's VW Turbo Beetle.

Definitely see your dealer.

you'd better check your suspensions, I have 03 TL-P and 04 Accord Lx, I feel the TL's ride is smoother then the Accord, I feel more bumpy in the Accord.

PS the spring/strut combo in the accord and tl are interchangable. I guess you could just purchase the stock suspension from an accord if its that big of deal.

I appreciate all of the responses, I am going to attempt to repurchase the 04 Accord that I recently sold. I figure with the transmission issue that I will only have 30,000 miles of transmission warranty coverage before I am hit with a transmission failure after 100,000 miles. I figure the 04 Accord will last a lot longer than the 99 Acura. Please close this thread.

Thanks again everyone!
