Ding Ding

Double whammy this week. On Tuesday, I'm sitting in my car, parked in a customer's lot, when another car (rental) pulls up next to me and parks to my left. The jerk in the rear right passenger seat, talking on his cell phone and holding an open laptop, attempts to open his door and get out. His first attempt opens the door part way, then he pushes it again -- right into my left front fender. As this group scatters, I look to find my first ding: a penpoint size chip, but noticeable on my NBP. I tell the driver -- not the guilty party -- that I hate to be anal about this, but I was sitting right there and this car is less than a month old. He claims he doesn't have a business card, doesn't know what to do as it's a rental, and that I should leave a note. After talking to the Acura dealer, I leave a note telling him it shouldn't be an expensive fix and that we should discuss. Upshot: no call. So I called my insurance company with the car's license plate and told them to go after him. Let the games begin.

To add insult to injury, the next day I'm driving on I-680 and a car in front of me kicks up a rock that puts a (small) chip in my windshield (front and center, of course). Jeezus, just what I needed! Again, the insurance company (USAA) will fix for nothing. Of course, I'm waiting to see what that's all about. Anyone have any experience with repairing a small windshield chip?

Life sure was simpler when I drove a car I didn't care about.

I'm just going to park mine in the garage, polish it now and then, and lurk around the forum here looking for vicarious thrills.

damn, don't you hate those inconsiderate drivers! I hate when people just open the door wide open and bang on the other cars and feels that they didn't do anything wrong.

Dings

Three weeks old. Takin the wif to the video store to return some tapes. I say "I'll stay out here and keep me eye on da car." I park where there are two open spots on either side. Roll the window down, open the moon roof and jus enjoyin the Cali sunshine. Up drives this friggin van with bus load of kids....It was like slow motion. I'm knowin whats next, so I'm reachin to start the car and move, and the kid in the front opens the door....As he is talkin to his dad...swinging it like he has only pulled up next to my 85 4x4 P/U. Misses my driver side mirror by 1/8"...DING Hits the door on the FRIGGIN CREASE... I must have gave the poor kid my worst death stare, cause I think he pissed his pants...I tell dad, look man I don't wanna be anal bout this, but U are goining to pay for this, one way or another. Got a bat in my trunk, and I'll return the favor to either ur head or ur ride.... I think he pissed his pants too..lol..

Called the Paintless Dent Masters. Man that dude was good.. Like it was never there. $80.00...

Not on my TLS, but this happened to my RX. It cost me $600 to replace the windshield.

Cool Big Chip

HEy,
these cars are magnets for flying rocks, and idiots! I went on a long road trip from Reno to Las Vegas just recently, and on the way down, there was a considerable amount of big truck traffic. By the time I reached Vegas, I had about 4 pea sized chips along the side of my car! I was so dissapointed! I looked everywhere for touchup paint, as the stuff that came with the car was not very effective. After trying the dealer and a couple autobody shops, I found this site www.paintscratch.com. I found my color within seconds, and ordered. Just got my paint and touched up the chips. It looks great now! So, the next time I am attacked by a rogue pepple kicked up by a big Truck, I'll know where to look!

Touch-Up

Hey BlueDriver:
Thanks for the site post. I was given some touch-up paint by the dealer on purchase, but was not happy with the match. This site looks like it guarantees the match. I'll give it a try. Appreciated again bud...BB

Another Ding!

I must have a sign on my car: IF I'M SITTING IN MY CAR, PLEASE OPEN YOUR CAR DOOR QUICKLY SO YOU CHIP MY PAINT.

Again, I'm sitting in a parking lot (Raley's in El Dorado Hills), talking on the phone, when the car is actually _rocked_ by the lady next to me who flung her driver side door into my front passenger door. I can't extricate myself from the car fast enough to stop her, but got her plate. I look to find another tragic chip.

I've already made progress with USAA after my last encounter, but I'm running out of energy trying to nail these arseholes. So I'm going to turn to the paintscratch people, as it looks like the real deal.

My question, which doesn't seem to be addressed directly on the paintscratch site: What about clearcoat? Isn't that required after touching up? If so, where do I get clearcoat and where can I find instructions on how to apply it?

Thanks for the help.

The paint seems to chip very easily, much more then the infiniti I had? I though Nissan was known for bad paint! Do the chips get bigger, anyone get fed up, and have it fixed under warnt. or anyone just repaint the whole car?

USAA is the only insurance I've carried on my cars. They are great when it comes to repairing windshield chips. I just have the SafeLite truck come to my house and fix the chip. In the past year, I've had it done 3 times. It costs nothing to get a chip repaired, but you would have to pay your deductible to replace a windshield. If you don't fix the chip, it will eventually crack and spread across your entire windshield. Get it done as soon as possible, before any water can get in the chip.

Call USAA claims, and one of the voice prompts is for windshield repair. They will schedule someone to come to your home or work to repair your windshield.

Yep, a friend had just finished getting a custom paint job his car, we went out to the mall parked clear out by the street, noone was even in this section of the parking lot, came out, someone parked right up next to him and look a chip in the paint. Looked down the edge of the drivers door on the other car and look, the chip of paint.

The other driver came out to find a game of tic tac toe on their hood that someone played with a hunting knife...

I think it's a nasty and ominous foreshadowing if the dealers give you a complimentary bottle of touch up paint with the car purchase

Hey--I didn't get a complimentary bottle of touchup paint with my purchase!

I could use some right now because I have a 5/8" long by 1/4" deep dark gouge (IOW, worse than a scratch or ding) in my front bumper that stands out like a sore thumb against the SSM color of my TL-S; don't ask me how I got there--all I know is that I didn't bump the front of my car against anything. Guess I'll have to try and sand away part of the plastic that's now protruding due to the gouge and then put some touchup so that at least it's not noticeable from a distance (yes, it's that noticeable).
