Did the Service dept Owned me?
Hi,
I recently noticed tons of transmission fluid on my garage floor and it had a trail as i pulled out of the driveway, continously leaking. And my tranny was slipping.
I asked my brother who took it out the nite before, but altho he didnt notice ne leakage, the car was driven by him (7-10 miles), while the tranmssion fluid kept leaking.
I took it to the dealer, here is there Diagnoses,
"Found a pin hole in the transmission Bypass hose. Replaced hose and refilled transmssion fluid."
My question to all is this, The car was driven with minimal or No transmission fluid and i noticed myself tranny slipping. I ALSO know, i jus get the oil jet kit installed 2 weeks ago. Do U think the tranny has been seriously damaged with this?
Im not buying the Pin hole bypass hose, how can a hose all of a sudden have a hole leaking trans fluid. It has on bout 20K miles and its a 2003.
I want to save myself from having a dead tranny issue AFTER my warranty ends.
Ur thoughts on this ....

Unfortunately, seeing as how you didn't see for yourself where the leak was, it will be really hard to argue with them. You'll be calling them liars in their faces with no evidence whatsoever -- just your hunch.
As long as the car drives fine, does it really matter?

Well - I now own a Tranny shop , so I can throw in my two cents.
Yes - low fluid level is a serious problem for a transmission. It can cause slipping (as you experienced) due to low line pressure. Slipping will quickly toast your clutch packs.
I hope you didn't drive it long like that. Smell the fluid to see if it smells or looks burnt. Burnt fluid has a distinctive smell. Once you've smelled it - you'll never forget it.

Here's a piece of automotive trivia for you'all.
Q. On an average car's engine oil dipstick (4-5 quart capacity is average), how much oil needs to be added if the level is at the low fluid level mark?
A. One quart
Q. On the average transmission (12 quart capacity is average {not the TL}), how much fluid needs to be added if the level is at the low fluid level mark?
A. One pint
Fluid level is very important.

*** UPDATE ****
I called the dealership and they said, when the car was brought in, it had bout 5qts of Transmssion fluid left in it. Meaning, i lost bout 4 quarts due to the hole in the bypass hose.
I know the car was driven bout 5 miles with that low level of Trans fluid.
As far as i chcecked, the transmission is not slipping any more.
Does this mean, that my transmission is fine or should i keep an eye on it due to the fact that it was driven with low levels for a period of time.
Ash.
