How do you deal with tailgaters?
I ask this in all seriousness.
As a rule, when tailgated on the freeway, I slowly decelerate about 5-10 mph. If they don't back off, I speed up & get as many car lengths as reasonably possible between us. If they come back, I brake down 15-20mph not quickly but more than the first time.
If they come back again, I brake check.

Granted I haven't been driving as long as the vast majority of you guys, but that doesn't quite sound sensible at all if you ask me...
I'm sorry but is having a rule for tailgaters necessary? Pointless to try to teach others who are driving recklessly a lesson & be the traffic police. Just ignore them or move over...they'll eventually get what's coming to them.
Adamlee, sorry to hear what happened & hope you recover. I'm not gonna debate whether or not you were in the wrong for them to brake check you, but I just hope everyone out there remembers to drive safe and defensively.

I have never had an accident as a result of this practice and as a rule I rarely get to the final phase, they generally get off my a*s.

I firmly believe having a contingency for possible scenarios is critical.
I don't know about you but I protect my safety and if someone is tailgating (so close I cannot see all of their hood) that is severely unsafe at freeway speeds, I want them off my a*s.
I am not being a teacher, or the traffic police, I am saying get off my a*s.
When this happens I am generally going the flow of traffic or above, not blocking the PASSING LANE (another peeve) nor in any way a point of slowing in a lane designed for free flow of traffic (car pool or passing).
If I am in the passing or car pool lane, going the speed I want to go (for example 70 in a 65) and someone is coming up behind me, I move over long before they are near me.
My post said what I do, what do you do?
I personally ignore them...as in I don't speed up or slow down or brake check...just keep driving the way I'm driving. If they're really persistent, I'll move over, no big deal to me; I'll let them "win" and feel a sense of achievement. I do however adjust my driving as to give myself more of a buffer zone so that if I did have to make a sudden action due to traffic ahead, the person behind me will have more of an opportunity to make corrective action in the event an instance does occur.

Freeway driving is a team sport. It's a shame the growing American superiority attitude ruins it.
...agreed.
Also agree it's unsafe for someone to tailgate. There is a thin line between trying to avoid an unsafe scenario vs. provoking the person tailgating. Your course of action just sounded like intimidation, which to me makes an unsafe condition even more unsafe.

100% These are the things that one should do instead of speeding away or slowing. Bot those things just provoke the person behind even more.
It wasnt a personal attack, but what you said to do just makes the situation worse. The thing you need to do is focus on your driving more than the person behind you. You need to be able to give yourself a larger buffer in front of you (without slowing to a crawl to make things worse) in case you need to react to something that would allow the idiot behind you to react. The very best thing to do if it bothers you so much is to just get out of the way of that person.
I did not tell anyone what to do, I said what I do.
I did not say I slow to a crawl nor speed away at 100MPH, these are both things you decided I said. In fact I said I accelerate at a reasonable pace & decelerate a small amount.
As far as letting them go, here in Phoenix, seemingly EVERYONE (almost) does this, if you kept getting out of their way you would never stop changing lanes.

Wow...What a blessing!
That is one of the worst single car accident pics I have seen in a while... God has something else for you to do!
Praying you find exactly what you are looking for!

glad you are ok, and as said before cars and repaired/fixed
sometimes much better to just rearend someone then have as seen happen, and let the framerails take the impact directly and airbag go off (would not have in this case though
, with needing a module and such), vs rolling the car and such and getting multiple impacts
but lowered cars do suck at times though for rearending someone, cause the bumpers kinda like to go underneth the car in front (and if a truck or suv, might go a little far up the hood which would be no good either) and hit the headlights instead

I would have probably only hit the Guy at maybe 10mph after we came to a stop, but the issue is that that road had just been repaved earlier that week and I was reacting with the thought this very familiar road and my car would behave together as they always had before. The shoulder is large enough for a truck, and I had driven that road for the past 8 years, the fresh oils in the asphalt and loose debris is where the road changed from something I was very comfortable and confident driving on, into something unpredictable that I couldn't compensate for fast enough. Regardless, saying you'd do one thing and actually being in a situation are entirely different. When you have less than 3 seconds to evaluate, react and handle a situation, things can change. I'm just thankful we have such safe cars and that it kept me safe enough to get out of the car and be lifted to a hospital.
I'm glad I get to stay in the acurazine community with the TSX, which is awesome! (both community and car :P)
