Have option to buy new 2001 non-navi or 2002 non-navi with $2,500 difference. Which do you think is the best long-term deal and why?
(Note: Please don't let a personal strong preference for one extra such as memory seats influence your whole decision)

If you're not getting the Type S I don't really think there is enough difference between 2001 and 2002 to justify a $2500 difference. I say go with the 2001.

get Navi. I think it looks better personally.
If you don't drive to unfamiliar places and don't get lost too often and $2000 is pushing it then don't get navi.
Do you like the new grill? Do you like tilting side view mirror when in reverse?
Then get 2002.
Performance on non type s is the same as 2001 and 2002.

I agree - if $2500 difference is not an issue between 2001 and 2002 non navi - your money would be better spent on a 2001 with NAVI and pocketing the $500 extra. I assume your concern is buying a car that will last, and differences between the 2001 and 2002 are minimal considering the longevity of this car (2002's were made AT MOST 4 months later than the 2001's). Buy the NAVI - it will pay for itself the first time you find yourself in a new place and need a bite to eat, or can't find an ATM, or are running out of gas, etc...

The five main differences in my opinion are:
1. The front grill. This is probably the big one. If you like the new one, then you would lean toward the '02. I like the old one better which is a big reason why I went for the '01.
2. CD Changer. The cost for buying a trunk-mounted one, installation, etc., will cost between $400-600, depending upon whether you get factory or Alpine, and where you install it. The '02s is standard and in-dash, which means no messing around with your wiring, and more trunk space.
3. Memory seats. If more than one person is going to regularly drive the car, then memory seats is a valuable option. It would be worth at least $300-500.
4. Fog lights. Standard on the '02. If you get the '01 and want them, you will have to buy lights, possibly cut into your bumper, set up the wiring, and buy a switch. Total cost would run anywhere from $200-500, and you could never get a fit as clean as the '02.
5. Rims. Which stock rims do you prefer, the 5 spoke ('02) or the 7 spoke snowflake ('01)? I don't like either of them, and just plannned on buying after-marketing rims.
Another factor would be whether you want a new color (Anthracite).
To me, the edge went to the '01 with the grill, to the '02 with memory seats and CD changer, and to a lesser extent the fog lights, and the rims were a wash. Plus, the '02 pricing was not set when I bought my '01, so there was uncertainty as to how much the upgrades would cost.
In the end, I am very happy with my decision to buy an '01.
