This changes a little from year to year. For the 2002 and newer, these were added:
Body Type/Transmission Type
6 - 4 door / 5-speed automatic (as opposed to 4-speed)
Vehicle Grade/Series
8 - Type S, no Navi
9 - Type S, Navi
And of course the model year designation is different.

The check digit is derived by using the remaining 16 digits of a VIN and running it through a mathematical formula to verify its accuracy. The value of the check digit can be 0-9 or the letter X. This way, police departments and insurance companies can spot a forged or altered VIN, say if someone changes just one letter or number in the VIN to hide a stolen vehicle, for example. Two identical cars may have different check digits because the serial number section of the VIN (the last 6 numbers) is different for each.
