we have been expecting an expanded vin list,,they already did that twice,,,
Everyone ck in with acura care or your dealer service dept can run the vin
or self serve types- look up list online and compare to your cars numbers
the inflator prob is worse than I thought,,not just causing severe injury due to excess speed,
It has (guessing based on there is a recall) actually exploded and broken the bag itself !
possible results: death to driver!!!
I've always said airbags are dangerous because they break collarbones and burn your face.
Learn to drive and avoid their use
Now THIS!! the airbag itself will cause more damage to you than the actual crash,,,greaaaaat
makes me long for the cars of old, when steel met steel = everyone shook hands and walked away

Looks like the 2002 TL's are no longer affected by this new recall, since my ex-2002 already had the airbag replaced twice in the previous two recalls.

recall: its not the bag = the inflator mechanism is deploying the bag at excess speed
which CAN rupture the bag
so the fix is a new inflator part
Even if `fixed` before- we all know what that means = may be a new part again
my point on airbags are dangerous-- was actually to encourage people to attend a few track day/high performance school days on a real race track- with a pro racer as your coach
End result is the abilty to spot problems ahead.. and how to drive around the scene of the crash- rather than plow into it
Plus you get to drive the TL at full throttle to max late braking points- correct turn-in to the apex- maybe some trail braking to stabilize it then back on the gas- full throttle again,,a major learning experience for 200$
my friend `the ER Doctor` says more injuries occur from the actual bag deployment,
the gas the talcum powder the impact to face and chest.. on smaller people especially!
all that = do what you can to never need the experience~

Not crashing the car is certainly the best idea. However in the event that it does happen, and lets face it, it does happen an airbag is a handy thing to have. An ER doctors anecdotal evidence aside, airbags have saved far more lives than they have taken.
Back on topic, How long does it take to have the work done? which airbags are they working on, the drivers side front, passenger front, or the side impact as well? Just curious, I have not had mine done yet and am wondering how long it takes and how involved the process is.

dont you get a loaner for the day?
#9
if loaner is available..better chances of that tues wed thursday
Ask when making appointment, driver age minimums may apply
Its not very long actual working time, but the tech has to be trained and certified in the repair, so they have to work in time between other jobs,
or more likely = have one guy doing these all day long
if my understand is complete and correct, its the steering wheel inflator mechanism
replaced with unit of correct speed
does not remove or mess with the airbag itself during the repair

@kqxqx : Register at owners.acura.com.
Talk to service department of your local dealership. They will lookup your VIN to find if your car is covered in this or not, and then you can take an appointment with them if needed.

This recall is basically expanded to inspection of ALL vehicles with this part. Something like 273,000 Acura's and over 600,000 Acura/Honda vehicles.
The current TSB (from 12/8/11) list no VIN range. It says the car must be checked via some Acura/Honda system (InVIN or something). TSB 09-033, revised 12/8/11.

Additional documentation avialable via the NHSTA here: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/recallsearch.cfm
After you get the seach results choose "Document Search" for a (long) list of avialable documents regarding this recall.

So we don't need to check VIN coverage and all that. and can directly go take an appointment with dealer n get it checked?

The way I read it was, call a dealer and have them run the VIN in their system to determine if they need to inspect your car.
That's what I did and they said, "Yes, bring it in." However, I think a LOT of people are going to get that answer.
Of course, you could just "stop in" or make an appointment if that's more convenient than a quick phone call.

I think i read something in car and driver too.
Maybe for dealerships doing recalls/replacements where the whole process is detailed and engineered to the extreme its not an issue.
I've always been curious after hearing about it, interesting that its different for you.
-or-
maybe up here in BC with our government run insurance agency they enforce rules like what i heard.
edit: fyi: in BC we only have one insurance company - its run by the government
we have these things called "crown corporations" - its a company, ran like a business, but owned by the monarch/gov.
-or-
im wrong :P

Recall experience
So I just got back from my dealership to have this recall addressed. I was notified via the mail that my car was affected by this recall. I called to schedule an appt. with the dealership last week. They checked their system, and my car indeed needs the replacement. I went today for my appt. and after an hour of waiting, they tell me they didn't have the part! I am extremely pissed about this because if they confirmed last week I needed the replacement, why did they not have the part on hand for the appt. This is defintely my last Acura.
