dealer oil

i know synthetic is "better". I'm asking if the dealer uses 5W-20? is that a synthetic oil? sometimes I think they just screw it and use 5w-30. that's not synthetic is it?

basically i just want ot know if the oil that my dealer uses is synthetic and can i request it?

If you go for the first 2 (or 3) complimentary services, they'll put in 5W-20 dino oil. My first oil change at 6,000 kms I specified Synthetic (paid extra $50) so they put in 5W-30 Synthetic (right on the work order so now they can't ever deny using 5W-30. Second oil change at 10,800 kms, I just bought a jug of Mobil 1 5W-30 and had them do the service free. Third one at 15,000 kms, I'll do the same thing.

5W-30 is fine, as with many of the experienced oil changers in this here forum would say. 0W-30 would be a higher performance synthetic. I read some use Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 (more popular @ around $24.00 or so from Wal-Mart) Connoseurs use AmsOil, and Royal Purple, but they cost extra. And, no the dealer would not put in synthetic unless you either pay for it or bring your own.

IMO for a few extra buck, it's peace of mind for me.

I was under the impression that "authentic Honda motor oil" was really 5W-30 Castrol GTX (or whatever weight and viscosity the car calls for).

Personally I use 5W-30 Castrol Syntec. I bring a case to my local shop and they change it for $5.

My Acura dealer uses Valvoline non-synthetic oil 5W-30 weight.

Mobil makes a 0W-20 weight synthetic oil, I have seen it at Walmart.

depending on what year your tl is... it may require 5-20, and Honda sells this and it should be good for 6000 miles. I have 180,000 miles on my Legend and it has always had Valvoline semi synthetic for about $2-$3.00 ea qt.
