Is the Dealer BS'ing Me???
Hi All. I had my tranny replaced in my '03 TL-S in November, 2002 with 22,500 miles. I have recently (past 2 months) been feeling a weird shifting going on while on a highway or local road. When I drive about 40 mph or about 70 mph, the car feels like it quickly downshifts, then upshifts, almost like a "bucking" feeling. It is real quick and happens once or twice every few days. I brought it to the dealership for normal scheduled maintenance and explained the problem to them. The service manager said it was normal and that it is called "Hunting" and that if the car was not hunting that he would think there is a problem.
No knowing too much about cars (except stats), I was asking a guy at work about it, using the term "hunting". He told me that hunting was not normal and that a car should not do that. In the meantime, I received a notice from Acura titled "Improved Powertrain Control Module" stating that they have developed an improved PCM and some cars needed a new fuel pressure regulator. I have been driving this car for a year on the new tranny and all of a sudden I get this letter from Acura. I am pissed off now because I could be ruining yet another tranny and now they want to fix parts related to it, while I have mentioned my "hunting" problem and was told it was normal.
Is the dealer BS'ing me???? Help!

Hunting is when the tranny gets sorta confused on what gear to use depending on RPMs and throttle position.
If you're in D5, sometimes the RPMs are too low. This puts it to a point that it forces itself into 5th gear then decides to downshift thinking that you want to pass if you added a bit of gas. No power whatsoever in 5th. At those speeds (40-70 mph) leave it in D4 and shift D5 at cruise (75+) If you still feel the "hunting" then the tranny definitely has a problem.

vicman17 - Thanks for the tip, I'll try that. I've never owned a car that has done this, that's why I think I'm getting BS'd.
Twenty03 Type-S - I live in Barnegat, close to LBI.

My tranny is always confused between 40-45mph when in d5 between 4th and 5th gear. Hunting is simply a generic term. If you engage the cruise control at this speed and are not on any sort of incline/decline, you should not notice this (if all is well), but a slight change in the level of the road of slight speed variation will indeed make it "hunt"...
The PCM issue is a whole other issue. If your vehicle falls in the range, this is something you need done. If that dealer is helping you, simply go to a different dealer...

Ehh, could be the torque converter locking and unlocking, especially if it's happening around 40-50 mph.
Hunting, in its general definition, is not necessarily a problem. It just means that the transmission is having a hard time deciding which gear to use.
If you are talking about what I you are, then you have no problems. My car does a similar thing, where I would be cruising then the RPM would dip down then come back up, all in a matter of a second. It feels like the car downshifted then shifted back up by itself.
If that's what you're describing, then don't worry. It's normal. I've got 12,xxx miles on my '03 and it does the same thing.

Maybe you are right, and it is considered normal, but if that is the case, this car is a P.O.S.
