are d2r and d2s interchangeable?

just browsing through some pictures of bulbs and the reflective ones have some coating to not give as much light.

check it out

D2S (left) D2R (right)

do they work in the same holder or no?

i would immagine that the projector ones would be brighter since more bulb is exposed.

well, I came across somewhere, that you can modify a bit to fit the D2R base, but the light would be out of control, and glare upcoming traffic.

do a search... you will have to dremel the d2s base a lil to match the d2r..

NO... D2S was not design for HID reflector housings. D2S is for projector use only (does not mean you can't make it fit), because the actual projector controls the output of the light, along with the cut off shield. Which by the way is what produces that blue/purple color flicker you see on the TSX, BMW, etc...

This is the same effect HID reflector vehicle owners "attempt" to duplicate by going with higher Kelvin bulbs(6k,8k,10k), which results in less usable light and more of a blue/purple tint.

Projectors use standard 4300k exaclty the same that comes on our cars stock, just that again... due to the projector housing and the cut off shield, they get the blue/purple flicker, without compramising maximum light visibility on the ground.

How about us 99-01 owners that have the large difuser in front of the bulb?

For the 99-01 you might be ok, because as you mentioned. The large diffusers help re-direct and control the light output. However, you might still have some glare.

If you look at the two bulbs, you would notice a strip of metal, along the side of the D2R bub, this also aids in controlling light output. The D2S does not have this strip, again, because of the projector and cut off shield, it's not necessary.

How does the 99-01 housing look without the difuser, and would the light output be wild.

aaron and 00redtl have the diffuser removed do a seach and look for their posts in the picture gallery....i remember driving to AC with aaronn and i saw the way the beams look its crazy instead of shooting one beam you get 3 seperate beams spread out all over the road and you get a bright light at night so no need to raise the beams or use high beams

Why would anyone want to fuck up their lights by removing diffusers or using the wrong type bulb? This is one of the mods that will affect other drivers. I wonder if they can take you to court and win if they hit something while blinded by your unapproved lighting.

i can't see how it can fuck up the housing. i really can't see it making that huge of a difference if more bulb was exposed. there is a diffuser any ways so its not like it is just the bulb and reflector shining light. the bulb gets its light shined back and forces it to reflect.

im kinda curious what the difference would be

the masking is there to block stray light to achieve a correct cut off in the reflector housing. If you put clear light in the reflector the effect will be more glare for other drivers.

I've been running Osram d2s bulbs in my 99 for about 4 months now. The main reason I got the d2s bulbs is because they were cheaper than d2rs (got them off of ebay). I had to modify the base with a dremmel. This took about 30 seconds. As for as brightness, I really can't say. Mine were much brighter than my stock bulbs, but my stock bulbs were 6 years old and had some chalky looking build up in them. One of them had turned pink. I would say that i have been bright lighted 2 times in the past 4 months, so the glare must not be that much of an issue.

calm down homie. If you wanna be mad at someone, be mad at the driver of an suv/lifted truck/18 wheeler/cop car/ufo. Sue them for, glare from their headlights.

yes. i had the diffuser removed and the light wasnt really WILD. just looked like there were three beams shooting straight from both headlamps. i pointed them to the ground, but only problem was, there were dark spots in between the beams.

but now i retrofitted projectors so im using D2S's. for a while i used OEM D2r's but only shaved.

removing the diffusers doesnt really make things that much worse. just gets time to get used to. its definitly brighter than having the lame halogen look diffusers on. it makes us look like those old-school ricers with autozone cheap blue bulbs..

its called experimenting and trying to see if we can yield better vision. plus, we're not trying to blind people and sometimes it comes out dull. but the reason for people here asking is so they dont make the mistakes some of us experimenters already had made.

noobs are getting worse these days on AZ.

nice link!

it says:
"The main difference is the U-shaped masking on the D2R that blocks out unpredictable light in certain directions. Also, the base has different notches. Name of base is P32-d2 for D2S and P32-d3 for D2R. D2R was developed so that Mercedes could still use their reflector based headlights in the mid 1990s"

So if you put D2S line in TL and it will cause glare. Nothing to "experiment" here

Hmmm good info, that means I shall buy a real D2R bulbs instead buying modified D2S.
