Cool Couple of TL's at the track

Yesterday DragonTL and I went to the local dragstrip to run our cars. He had just installed his Comptech headers and we were curious as to the actual performance gains. DragonTL's TL has headers, AEM short ram intake, and 17" CLS wheels; and I have Flowmaster exhaust, K&N drop-in filter, and 18" SSR wheels. We both had full interiors including the spare. We ran our TL's many times and tested different driving configuration (SS, D5, D4, TCS on/off, etc.) We both launched by power-braking to ~2.5k rpms and flooring it.

The results were as expected. DragonTL pretty much consistently beat me by .2-.4s as we passed the 1/4mile mark. However, I believe that my best time for the night of 15.6942@90.37mph slightly beat his best. Hmmmmmm...

Here's my best timeslip:

I'm on the left(#76)and on the right was a slammed, stickered, mismatched wheels havin, latest model Mitsu Eclipse (Can you say spanked? )

Here're some pics right before we entered the track:

DragonTL, if you have anything to add (commentary, your times, more pics, etc) please do so.

Did any of you ran with the Prelude. My stock TL could hang with the Prelude no problem.

The Prelude belongs to DragonTL's friend. It's a 5-speed with only an AEM intake. He made several runs with Dragon, but not me. But from the runs that I saw, the prelude ran low to mid 16's. So you are correct that our TL can probably hang with those 'Ludes. Maybe Dragon can elaborate.

It's the factory kit.

Those are nice TL's! I wish we had a track in my area.
BTW, Tony Stewart was at my buddies house last night having some beers. I guess he was around because he is racing at Sears Point

Did your TL run a better time with TCS on or off? I never tried it with it off yet 15.6 was my best time too, but i never hit 90MPH.

Nice runs. Have you run your car before the wheels, do you think they slowed you down? I'm not sure how much those weigh.

a properly driven lude is no match for the tl. a lude is a low 15 second car. if he was getting 16's, he must really suck.

Definately with TCS OFF (TCS light on). If you have it on and your tires start slipping, your car will bog down.

The funny thing is, I ran my TL totally stock except for the K&N filter a month after I bought it, and my best time was 15.9@89.6mph. Guess the exhaust made a big difference. Although I don't know the exact weight, the 18" SSR's are not that heavy.

I have to agree with the fact that the driver really matters with 5 speed lude & our TL.

Cuz I had few runs with my friend's 5 speed lude, he got intake as well. He beat me by 2 feet the first time. Then we were pretty much dead even. He jumped off the line faster then I did, but I caugh up with my 2nd gear. Then we are about even by then...

His gf raced with me once. She got a bad launch, and I win by about 5 feet. Not that she is not a good driver, but she doesn't drive the lude that often. She drove a Eagle Talon before and is trading it in for a 2001 Blue Prelude.

Hey guys, the night at the track was fun. I only had wished that my car ran better times.

Anyhow, way to get the time VDo. I would have to say that you did beat my best time that night. However, you did run later at night with less cars running. You probably noticed that as the track cooled down and the ambient temperature dropped, your car was making more power.

To my dismay, I thought my car would surely run mid to low 15s, but I just don't know. Maybe I have a defective header, or my engine just plain sucks. Maybe my TypeS rims are slowing me down a lot, because they are freakin heavy, by about 5 to 10 lbs compared to stock setup. That is a lot of rotational mass that needs to be accelerated.

Well, I don't want to make any excuses, but I think the biggest thing was in my third gear. I posted before that I got into an accident and that my driver side suspension is messed up. Anyhow, as I hit around 50+ mph, my car starts to vibrate like I have unbalanced tires. It's as though my car hits a brick wall and the car doesn't rev any faster in the Vtec region.

As for the headers, they have made an improvement, however, i couldn't justify it at the track. I think the cold air intake would have benefited a lot more that night, since the air was hot and humid.

To give you guys an idea, my 60 ft. times were all aroudn 2.40, like VDo's. My best 60 ft. was 2.37, which I could not reproduce again. After running my car 5 times, I just quit, because I felt sorry for my car.

I will fix my car in the near future and have it running good and I will go to Texas Motor Speedway in Ennis and run it there once more and see how my car does then.

But until then, I had fun VDo. We should do it again sometime and nice runs.

A few questions,

What elevation was the track at?

What was the temperature at humidity?

How much gas was in your tank?

Your mph is good for much quicker 1/4 times. With only 88-89 mph I typically run 15.4's to 15.5's at sea level with 60-70 degree weather and 40-60% humidity (That's low for the south)

With some more practice and better weather your times should drop quite a bit.

The track is at 103' above sea level, the weather was around 75 degrees with 65% relative humidity.

I had 1/2 tank of gas.

With those CL-S rims being so heavy they probably had alot to do withe your best time being slower than VDO-s. A 5-10 lbs per rim differential is equivalent to adding a ton of weight to your car. Since the rim is spinning and requires power to turn it faster. The heaveier it is the more power it needs. Sprng vs unsprung weight.

For drag racing it's more of a rotational inertia thing: i.e. how hard is it to spin the wheels and tires.

Unsprung weight also includes quite a bit of suspension and brake componentry in addition to the wheel / tire package, and unsprung weight affects handling. That's of course a whole 'nother discussion!

You'd probably run the best times with 15" aftermarket 3-piece racing wheels, but them big rims sure look nice...
