Copying a Navigation Disc
Copying a Navigation Disc
Can someone give me instructions on how to make a backup of my Navigation Disc. I have a DL burner and DL media. I also have a 2003 Acura TL.
What programs do I use and what steps do I take.
Thanks!

try using dvd decrypter or imgburn to rip and burn the disc.
http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/
download the program
open the program and let it see your disc.
click mode and select read.... select where you want your image to go, make sure you have enough space and it is easy to get to, you will do this by clicking on the destination folder. i like to select my desktop
it will read it and tell you the info of the disc
click the dvd rom image at the bottom of the screen and it will begin to rip it.
after a while it will finish ripping and now its time to burn
you will then click mode again and scroll to write
put your dual layer rom in the drive
you will now have to select the DVD FILE not the image, if you select the image it will tell you that your an idiot and do it for you.
then click that same icon that you did to rip it and it will begin to burn.
i have not done this before on factory nav discs, but have on after-market nav discs and high def movies and regular dvds also. i dont know if those discs have a special layer break for the dual layers, but you should be fine without adjusting settings
this is the same for movies and other media.. good luck
let me know if that does not work and i can tell you a couple settings to adjust.

I tried to burn a backup of my Acura Navigation disc with Nero. I am very computer literate so basically i created a image with Nero and burned it with Nero using a Verbatim DVD+R DL disc. I put it in my vehicle and it reads 50% of the time. the other 50% of the time it will say dvd read disc error. And i have to eject and put it back in and it will work fine again. But then when I turn off the car and turn it back on it will give me the same dvd read disc error. I think the error is something like "Unformatted Disc". Any thoughts?

when you put your factory nav disk in, check to see what the layer break is, and then check to see if it matches up under the settings and then under write.
and its not illegal. you are allowed to back up 1 copy of any media that you own, but one 1 copy, and if you lose your original copy you must get rid of the burned copy, but if you break the original you must keep the bits for proof its a law. look it up
if i get a hold of a factory copy, im sure its not hard to change anything, i do it all the time to the aftermarket ones, but like i said, ive never tryed it on the factory nav discs you might be right.

You're talking out of your ass my friend.
The problem with making backups is that copyright law doesn't clearly define what is legal and what is not. It falls into a massive gray area called fair use. What is legal in this regard is not defined anywhere in written law but instead by a huge pile of contradictory court rulings over the course of many years. Legislature has avoided codifying specifically what is legal and what is not because it is a very nuanced topic that has had many confounding factors which change far faster than politicians can keep up. The closest they've come is the DMCA and that's a huge pile of crap that basically says if copyright holder feels like being a pain in your ass, they are free to do so.
In the end, you probably won't get in trouble but it's still entirely possible that you could. These rules and such you are describing about what makes a backup legal or not are nothing more than rumor.

CLOSED. It's been discussed many times and not many (that I know of) have successfully 'copied' this disc. I'm sure if you have an original and it fails for some reason, the manufacturer will be able to replace it ... (if there is some nominal cost or not ... that depends on the manufacturer).
