Converting 1999 TL NAVI to 200x NAVI
I own a 1999 3.2 TL NAVI. Is there a way to convert the wiring so that I can use the DVD based NAVI unit? In other words, is there a some sort of wiring connector that might be used so that the DVD drive could be used in place of the hard disc drive currently installed on my car?
Has anybody successully converted over from the hard disc to the DVD drive on their 1999 TL?
Thanks for any help that you might be able to give.

Hey...MichaelJW
This is just my opinion....Why don't you spend that kind of $$ towards to different mod. I mean..you've already have Nav system on your TL and spending hundreds of $$ for just for upgrading?? Again...that was just my thought!

Another way that would be much cheaper and could possibly work is to just buy a bigger PCMIA hard drive (thats whats in the 99 Navi's) and copy the contents of the DVD to it. Just for fun I popped my Navi's hard drive into my laptop and saw it was a 300 meg drive and the databases were only using 180 megs Has anyone ever tried putting the DVD into their computer to see how much space its using? It could be possible for us 99 Navi owners to just buy a 5-10 gig PCMIA hard drive, copy the DVD navi contents, and wallah, have coast to coast maps

Yes I have converted my hard disk 99 navi to the DVD unit. To me it was worth the $$$. There are only 4 connections in the back and they are compatible so all you have to do is disconnect the 4 plugs on the 99 navi and plug it into the DVD unit.
As far as burning the DVD data into a PCMIA hard drive, I really don't know how big the DVD coverage is but I am assuming that it is huge considering it covers the whole US (not really but almost).
If you got the $$$ then definitely convert. It is so easy and quick. It took like no more than 10 minutes to load it up. And you don't have to worry about switching disks from now on.
Hope this helps.
BTW Tommy, are you talking about me not being on the site anymore? I hope not because I was one of the biggest PW.

the DVD cant possibly more then a couple of gigs because they do have size limitations Im sure you could find a PCMIA hard drive big enough to hold the contents of the DVD. However it might run you a couple hundred bucks so you just have to decide whats worth the money to you.
