Thumbs up Comptech Spring Musings

Just did the Comptech springs and all I can say is wow! Well, it is I, so of course I can say a few more things:

1) Turn in is great; much crisper and more linear, with gradual lean as opposed to the stock car's sudden heave over.

2) The ride is better than the TL-S springs. Shock (tar strips, etc) impact damping is better, and surface irregularities are not as unsettling. Much less jiggly as many have reported in the stock setup. This is much closer to the European tuning I have had on BMW's I have owned.

3) The look is awesome. At Crown Acura in Ricmond, the Service Manager actually came out from his air-conditioned office to look over the car, and said "they all should come looking like this one here". He also admired the "Comptech wheels"; I did not have the heart to tell him they were Speed Star Racing wheels.

4) No rubbing - with the 45mm offset I was somewhat anxious there would be, but so far, so good - I rolled the fender edges just in case though.

5) The alignment is spot on, front and rear, according to the dealer. The extra 1" of track may have allowed them to get a better camber fix than some of you have reported, or perhaps they just figured it was close enough to report as spot on.

6) Labor: Cost me $250 + $70 for the alignment. A bit pricey, but Acura dealer certified and warranted.

All in all, I have to agree with those that said this was the single best mod they have done.

Riding lower is affecting my brain, though. I find myself saying "Yo" a lot, and listening to Korn and turning up the bass. The thought of neon is now more than a passing fancy.

Whazzatallabout?

Yo Rage,

So exactly how many inches of drop waz it front and back? Thats how much you'll lose on compression travel with the stock shocks. Hopfully stock shocks have enough margin to give you decent compression damping travel. On HARD cornering do you sense any suspension bottomming (i.e. shocks is fully compressed and is hitting the bumpstop)? I must know before I get comptechs installed on mine!!!

Thanks.

Too early to tell - I did not measure the drop.

Anyone with more experience care to take a shot at this one?

Hw do you think clearance will be affected if you were to add a body kit?? Thats the only thing holding me back, fear of scraping.

Also do you mean the quality of ride in respect to ride harshness is better compared to the stock springs?? Most are saying the handling is improved with a small penalty in harshness. What do you feel? Thanx in advance

I found some interesting coilovers for TL. Apexi and Mugen makes them for Accord which I think fits TLs. They cost a lot more but worth considering... Any thoughts on coilovers?

Did you get or consider the camber correction kit?

I spoke with Comptech today - they said for the moderate 1.25" drop the stock shocks are fine and up to the task. They recommend and sell the Konis for the ability to tune the shock further if needed.

I went over a sppeed bump today that had no yellow paint to warn me and popped things pretty well, and there was no shock to my shocks, only a shock to my senses. The bump stops were not invoked.

I vote a-ok on the Comptech springs overall.

Anybody get the springs done in SoCal, preferably near LA? If so, how much and how did it go?

Road Rage --
I don't know if I can get Duncan in Roanoke to do any mods. Are you happy w/ Crown, the work the do, the prices they charge, etc.?

I have to say I have had nothing but positive experiences with them - much better than their friends next door (the BMW store).

The techs work clean and precisely, and I have never had to let them "take another whack at it".

Contact Chris Lutton (asst. service mgr) and tell him "the guy with the hopped up silver TL-S and the red NSX" sent you - he usually cuts me a break on labor rates and does seem to really like the cars he cares for.

They have never busted my chops like BMW did when I did the slightest mod (a Borla exhaust for cryin out loud!). They installed my Comptech headers and exhaust on the 02 before I even took delivery, no questions asked, no "release" to sign, nothin.

As I wrote for an article I had published int he BMW Roundel, "BMW makes enthusiasts cars, but doesn't seem enthusiastic about those that want to make those cars better".

I got my Comptech springs installed at Discount Tire Center in El Monte for $100, and my Comptech sways for $50. Ask for Vic. Not sure if that is his everyday price because I bought rims and tires from him at the same time.

Thanx Oblio, just wanted additional opinions as i have my doubts my kit woudl stay scratch free here in NYC for long after being dropped.

P.S. Ditch the wife and kids and come on down the meet on Sat. I really wanted to see your car in person.

Thats pretty big drop in the front. When you load up the car with 4 passengers, how much lower will the car sit. We'll be eating away all the compression travel on the shocks.

It actually doesn't go down much with more weight. I was quite suprised. I have 5 people in my car quite often and never had problems.

That's what they advertise. True drop is much bigger.

2 1/4" in front.
1" in rear.

This is the difference (lowered with slightly larger diameter wheels and tires). It's noticably more than 1".

With stock rims, it doesn't look slammed or g. It looks like it should have come stock, imo. Someone had their black TLS lowered recently. It made the car's line flow much better, classy.
