Comptech Headers? 0-60 Improvement??

Comptech Headers? 0-60 Improvement??
Hi all, i've heard the Comptech Headers increase HP by about 20-30. I know i'ts mostly in the high RPM's, but does it improve the 0-60? I would imagine it would, but by how much?
Is it really worth dropping a grand for something giving you minimal power increase?

They are totally worth it. Definitely one of the best mods for the car. My guess is that you would probably drop about .3 to .5 sec. on the 1/4 mile. Almost all of the power is up high (over 4800rpm) where the peak HP of around 30hp at the wheel is gained. You're looking about 15-20hp everywhere else.
If you don't want to drop $1k... buy the OBX headers for ~$400. They are new and the same design as the Comptech. They were also dynoed with a little more power down low!!

It is very likely that under controlled circumstances like at a track that you would see differences with a stopwatch. On the street it is doubtful that you would see the difference of 15Hp@ 6k RPM.
You still end up in one pipe when you get to the catalytic converter.
Better use of the grand,,,rent a Viper for a few weekends

so is there a difference between OBX and Computech, if money is not an issue which would u perefet ppl???? and is it wise to get a biger pipe from the headers on to the mufler?? cause if u get biger headers but then end up going back to a smaller pipe, whats the point, still have same back pressure??

Well, since OBX bought Comptech's design.. they should be very similar. Several people over on ACL.com bought them... so I'm probably going to wait until spring time to make a decision. We'll see how they withstand heat from the engine and freezing winter temperatures. If they come through with flying colors... I'll pick them up... if not.. Comptech's all the way!!

so no need to change the piping out once u put in headers?? hhmm ok, now im going to get better imporvement on 80 and up, what will the do for the lower speeds as far as performance? and how can u imporve lower end torque and horspower?

As for difference... everyone who has them says the difference is very noticable.. and the one guy who dynoed them got 35 HP at the wheel with an intake, new plugs, and pulleys.... but he did a baseline run.. so it's all relative.
Check out this topic for your reading pleasure... it should answer all of your questions about build quality.....

link not found, when i click it, sorry for the questions, just my next mod, and dont want to waste money, when u say noticible difference, what are they??? do u know???? and what states have the CARB compatibility regulations??? or were can i look that up,

When I say noticable... I mean ~35hp (peak) to the wheel... that's about 42hp (peak) additional at the crank... meaning ~302 total HP (peak) at the crank..... probably drop 1/2 a second or so off of your 1/4 mile time. 0-60 in the high 5 seconds.... all conditions permitting (traction, temp, etc).... but the potential is there with the additional power.
I believe California is the only state that has CARB certifications....
Honestly.. I'm still curious to see a stock CL-S/TL-S add these and do a before and after dyno. That to me would provide the best evidence of gains.....

I agree, unless someone has real tested figures we are taking everyones opinion. Someone who spent $1k is likely to say it is better every time. Having a neighbor who races and builds engines he says no way that I would feel a difference with just headers alone. And a 0-60 time in the mid 5 sec range is virtual reality, headers do nothing for 0-60 times in an engine as high revving as ours. In fact it may make it slower from 0-30 as a result of moving the power curve higher.

Rysky007 - headers scavenge out the exhaust better than stock. When that happens more of the air/fuel mixture can get in on the next stoke of the engine, and that is where the added power is coming from. It is not completely due to reduced back pressure. Really good headers have correct lengths such that as each pulse travels down them it "pulls" (by way of a slight vacuum) the next cylinder's gases out as well. That is why headers add power. Four inch systems look cool but slow down the exhaust flow too much, robbing power. IMO what is on our cars after the headers is just about right as some guys are running low 14's.

Roadman - you are right.. however, the thing about the OBX headers is that they supposedly give more power down low vs. the Comptech. Definitely not enough to drop the 0-60 to mid 5's (I never said mid 5's).... but potentially enough for high 5's or 6 (Acura advertises the TL-S at 6.28, so it's possible to drop the .28).
Anyway... a bunch of people are ordering them from the CL board.. so hopefully one will do a before and after dyno with a stock car.....

Juniorbean,
Sorry for the misquote on the 0-60 times. The dyno is nice but does anyone have a before and after (headers) track timed 0-60 result ? Or has anyone driven a headers/no-headers car back to back on the street.
Dropping .28 fron a 0-60 time would be quite a seat in the pants difference in feel and would definately add merit to a $500 headers upgrade.

Honestly it's very difficult to time 0-60 runs. I don't believe any tracks are really setup for this. I would think you could drop the .28 0-60... but the only real timing test would be 1/4 mile.
BTW... I am in sooo much trouble when I get home tonight b/c I just ordered them. I couldn't resist at $340 shipped... that price is too unbelievable....

I just ordered those bad boyz myself. Like Juniorbean, I'm gonna be in so much trouble when the wife finds out. In fact, in the comments field for the order, I asked them to label the box "baby crib".
But yeah, this price is unbelievable.
I have a stock TL-S, so if someone can recommend a dyno shop in the Houston area, I'll look into a before and after run. Cost is a consideration tho, since the wife will hafta be placated.
