Complimentary oil changes aren't free

If you normally change your own oil, you end up paying for it...

For Christmas, I bought my TL a jug of synthetic eggnog, its first. So Christmas day I tried for an hour to remove the oil drain bolt with no luck. I've done this many times before, yet this time I felt like a wimp. I ran out of Popeye's spinach, so I then pulled out the trusty electric impact wrench, and it too fell in defeat. Being pissed off, I gave up.

For the last change, I brought my car to Acura to get the tranny replaced, and also got a free oil change, which I should have declined. I can't believe that they used an impact wrench to tighten the damn bolt.

I ended up going to Honda and asked them politely to use a wrench to tighten the bolt. When I get the car back, the tech tells me it took them 3 guys to break the bolt loose.

Oh, and for Honda's labor, I'm out $16 which I could have paid myself.

Yeah I swear there are some idiots working there. Isn't the pan aluminum and aren’t you supposed to use a crush washer torqued to the specs or risk stripping the pan threads?

I remember reading a thread this guy posted here about his cracked oil pan … came from over- tightening his oil plug.

The same goes for the wheel lugs, they tighten them waaay too tight. That is why I do as much as I can myself … sorry to hear about your experience, lesson learned I guess.

Whats next? You're going to tell me that the Free Love of the 60's wasn't really FREE?
Do I have to send back payment checks to all those girls
Bummer

Torque specs: I suggest the Harbor Freight Tools 15$ click wrench
oil plug 29 ft lbs- a pretty good tug, not Mongo (Blazing Saddles) use hammer against wrench tight!!!!
oil filter- 1/2 to 3/4 turn after seal contact
wheel lugs- stock- 80 foot lbs

I just used the rubber grip wrench to mangle my shop installed oil filter off and put on a K&N, it has a 1 inch nut welded to the top for easy removal, and a safety wire hole for the racers use

The dealer offered me a detail and oil change for the delay in getting my transmission replaced. I may get the detail after I talk in person to the guy who does them, but the oil change I told them thanks anyway, I just changed it myself!

Damn, Roger. I'm surprised it didn't crack or strip the thread on the oil pan.

I just might have to jack up the front and check to see if there is any damage or leaks.
