Unhappy Code P0730 and I'm only able to move in 2nd gear...

So the other night my wife (who now drives my TL) was complaining of some tranny shift problems. The car was dead that morning and I jumped her. After we got it started there was this electronic loud buzz coming from the side of the transmission closest to the firewall. The car had a problem getting into reverse and second. That night I had to jump her again on the way home from work so I decided to drive the car hoping to get to autozone and fix the battery problem. Well I only got about half way there before the check engine light came on and the the TCS light followed by an inability to switch into 4th gear. Any time it would try I would lose all power and the car would just rev. Eventually it just completely quit moving at all. So I had her towed home. Yes... I cried. What a sad thing to see my TL on the wrecker. Anyway I got her home and checked a little further into the problem and found the code P0730 about the gear ratio. I figured out as well that I can get her to move in second gear but not in reverse or 1st. I have no idea what the problem is and I'm still getting the electric buzzing noise from the back of the engine. I can't seem to pinpoint where it's coming from though. Any ideas or suggestions? Don't really know if I want to pay to take her to a tranny shop if the thing is shot. I just changed the fluids about 15K ago and since my wife's been driving there certainly hasn't been any overuse of the car. I'm also at 270K on the odometer. Impressive for the original tranny! Let me know if you think of anything. Thanks guys.

P0730 typically means the trannys shot. Everything your describing says that you need a new tranny. At 270,000 you might want to take a strong look at your options.

1500.00 to 3000.00 on a new/used tranny or a another TL or a down payment on another car.

Depending on the condition of the car the AV6 tranny is the way to go, don't rebuild the one you have although it has proven it self at 270k. The buzzing sound if you can catch it on video and upload it I think is the best idea. Im willing to bet that the buzzing could be the oil pump starved of oil in the tranny due to a clogged internal filter, Maybe its something else like noisy alternator .

I didn't touch the battery since the car is starting fine now. It's kinda weird. I had to jump twice and now since the tranny quit it's starting fine without any jumps or problems

I've been seriously considering that and I've found one for $750 here locally with like 75K on it. Hoping ot go that route. Oil pump might be correct. It sounds more like an electronic sound like a solenoid though. The sound is definitely from the right side of the car if you're standing looking at the motor. The alternator isn't making any noises. Thanks for the ideas!

Needless to say your transmission is boned. I think it is simple coincidence that the battery issue popped up around the time your tranny went bad.

You said you've found an AV6 tranny for $750. That's a good deal. I'd go that route.

Hey 03Blackbeast, wow .....270k on the original tranny is impressive. If the car wasn't showing any previous signs of shifting problems, it may be a coincidence that things started acting erratically.

Start with having the electrical system fully evaluated and load tested. Check all the connections and grounds. The tranny is electronically controlled and can go to shit if there are gremlins running rampant within the wiring to it. Alot cheaper to eliminate the electrical side as the culprit before declaring the tranny dead. Reset the codes and see what happens.
