Happy New Year to everyone. My 99 tl has roughly 209,xxx miles and I am looking to replace timing belt ans water pump on it. I called few places so far the cheapest ones are $680 2yr or 24k miles warranty. Other place quoted $ 720 with 18 months or 18k miles warranty. At 200k what other things must be looked at while doing the timing belt and water belt change at high miles? Thanks and I know this topic has been covered before. Please be generous lol.

 

I'd say add Cam and crank seals, Also try to get a kit with a new tensioner for the timing belt.

 

Because of the age and mileage, I would suggest changing the seal between the oil pump and the block. Even if it's not leaking now, it will, before you need to do the belt again. It will add a little more labor, as I believe the oil pan has to be dropped for access. I didn't do this on my daughter's tl, and have been cleaning up the mess at every oil change for the last 50k miles or so. There is no measurable oil loss on the stick, just the mess. Also as it's been posted many times before, replace ALL pulleys, tensioners, hydraulic tensioner, idlers, and water pump. Many on here have gotten the complete kit from rock auto, and had an independent shop do the labor.

 

absolutely replace all belt tensioners and idler/roller pulleys, and their respective belts

cheaper to do it now than have a failure= which could negate the engines usefulness at its intended function
ie: t-belt tensioner failure and loss of tbelt will destroy the engine internally

the Asian kit is alleged to be made by the oe maker- no complaints heard from anyone using it on here

plan on adjusting the valves, new valve cover gaskets and the rubber seal for the bolts holding cover on
Clean the intake manifold/egr-TB iacv yadayada, new TB gaskets
now is a a good time to install a thermoblock/heat spacer if desired ~100$

in general maintenance- new battery cables and the small braided ground cable set.
Flush the power steering twice
replace Filter on trans, new Honda DW-1 atf

and for everyone- every year!!! FLUSH the brake fluid!!
this will easily save you more than the 10-15$ invested in fluid, by improved braking pressure and overall caring for the calipers
