I was told by one of the mods here to just get a good degreaser and hose it down. No need to cover anything. Once everything is to your liking, just put some armor over the cables or something close to it.

More or less, what djescobar said is right...I just use dawn soap in a bucket with water and a rag, and rinse down with the hose on the mist setting....
Run the motor around the block to help dry off and I use Chemical Guys Fade 2 Black for the hoses, etc.

Probably... May involve more elbow grease since a degreaser really cuts through the grease alot better. But yes, I dont see why not.

No cleaner.
Just use water, maybe a bit of Palmolive.
To do a good job (to my standard) takes at least a couple hours spread out.
You see different angles that way.
Use this on the hoses and plastics to prevent fading and cracking.

http://www.michelinman.com/tire-care...care-products/
Look at my thread for a good example of a clean engine bay.

for cleaning- `Simple Green` heavy duty cleaner made in a spray bottle, or can of Gunk `citrus scented` engine cleaner (regular stuff smells bad for days)
cover the alternator, ps res and brake master cyl with baggies
Do your best to avoid spraying right into those areas
You can pretreat the alt by spraying wd into it before wash
WD40 actually stands for Water Dispersant (test formula #40)

a GENTLE rinse from the garden hose with a dispersing nozzle--make a misty rain not a direct blasting

be aware of runoff and the hazard it causes to the environment
Gunk also makes a cleaner that makes hoses shiny too

ck wd can about use on rubber
dont use armor all on anything!!- it dries out and cracks whatever its on
Get a good dash cleaner like 303,,ck TAP plastics for that

If you use the Michelin product it will prevent cracking.
It is not a typical product.
It is one of the only products that restore chemical components back into rubber and plastics that are lost over time (UV rays, oxidation, corrosion, chemical exposure, ect).
I've used this on near brittle rubber with great success - almost bringing it back from the dead.
It doesn't have the super glossy look of Armor All, just a natural healthy rubber look, as that's what its formulated to do.
I feel that its safe based on the results I've seen keeping aging components/hoses healthy.
What do you think?

I will admit to doing that on many customer cars,,but generally treat my baby with a more gentle spray of water at home

There is the issue of getting moisture in the ps and brake fluid-
those are probably due for flush anyway- so do that after the area has been exposed to water

If michelin product says its ok on hoses- try it and tell us the result!
I know `gunk` makes one that cleans grime if you push nozzle full to Stream mode, and then use half push detent of nozzle for a mist type spray--
do the hoses with that for a nice shine - (protection level unknown to me, but looks good for a ziner Meet)

i think he means he needs someone to save his picture and then open it in paint or some other editing program, and then use red or yellow or some other color that will stand out to circle/show him what needs to stay dry...i would gladly do it but honestly i have no idea what to circle

There you go sir.
Good luck, avoid the outlined parts and you will do fine.

On a different note,

from my teenage point of view:
Dude,
Man up! - clean the g0d d@mn thing by hand!
I've been doing this since I was 10 - and to a lot worse off engines.
Your young, you don't need to buy anything special.
I clean my cars with Qtips!
Water + cloth + you + time = perfection (minus some Qtips).

as far as me washing my engine bay, all i do is spray on some degreaser, then come in with a pressure washer afterwards, maybe not quite perfect per say, but it does it job though (and as far as covering stuff, you just minamize spraying that area too much/hard)

and as far as the OP's engine bay it actually does not look too bad by the pictures, i have seen much worse (it has been cleaned before)

btw shoud't this be in the wash & detail section

if it has a cap you open to add brake or ps fluid to
or has bare electrical wires inside like the alternator
Avoid those-

think about flushing ps and brake fluid afterwards- the car is due for them,
and you remove any risk of moisture--
which those fluids suck from the atmosphere normally- let alone when a great direct source is added to them

yes I have mentioned GUNK by name several times already
great engine cleaner,, simple to follow instructions- follow them~
wear googles to protect eyes
I get under the car to get that oil that dripped during past oil changes and whatever road crud has appeared on my baby
use light mist spray from top down to rinse off

1- read gunk can directions
2- follow gunk can directions
3- allow to sit `x minutes` per gunk instructions, use hand towels-scrubbers as needed on greasy areas
4- rinse with fine mist spray from hose, rinse well or you smell gunk for a week as it burns off exhahust manifold and pipes
Use compressed air or towels as needed to remove water puddles and dry off everything!
5-remove protective baggies
6-Drive to finish drying-
that bad smell is gunk residue, next time buy Citrus scented gunk~

Note do this where runoff of water does NOT go to the sea or canal-delta drains
Its bad news for living things in the environment~

I spray it with a hose, then spray everything with degreaser, let sit for 30 sec, use a wheel brush to scrub everything, spray with hose again, let dry, then spray it ALL with Black Magic tire foam, and the wipe everything down with a damp microfiber.

I put it there seriously and kind of as a joke.

I don't remember... Is there anything like that in the TOS when you first sign up?
