Between Esso and Shell who has the highest octane and cleanest gas?

Cleanest gas would depend on the station you're going to. An older station most likely would have more debris in their tanks, while a newer station should have less debris.

Not sure on octane here since I've never heard of Esso.

Esso is like Exxon in the States. There used to be Texaco up here in Canadia but that disappeared when Esso came out. Shell and Petro-Canada comes from the same refinery (Keele and Finch), despite their claims of naming additives, they are the same gas. You can also see Shell trucks coming in to resupply Petro-Can stations. Sunoco also comes from there but from a separate facility, the Sunoco Premium is 92 Octane (as opposed to everybody else's 91) and also offer the Ultra 94 Octane but at a higher price. Sunoco also claims to have a higher Ethanol content. I don't think the dirt from a newer or older station would matter much since your car has a fuel filter (probably more than one) other than shortening the filter life.

I heard years ago that Esso was found to have a higher moisture (water) content. I also found out that Esso supplies the low-end and no name gas stations like Penny and Pioneer, etc... I never filled up in Esso since.

I seem to get better mileage on the TL-S with Sunoco 92 or Petro Can/ Shell Gold 91. Ultra 94 doesn't feel any different to me.

What's the story about Petro Canada having to many additives that are no good for your car?

havent seen any stations with a 93, you can do this though....
go to any gas station with 92 (silver) and then stop by CRAPPY TIRE and buy a bottle of NOS octane booster. if i'm not mistakened, they say it boosts up by +4....... add it up, and that'll be the 93 you're looking for!

For all this trouble, why not just fill up with Sunoco 94? The extra octane from NOS or 104+ won't do you any good, unless you're in the track and have mods that need the added octane.

The recommended fuel is 91 octane. The extra octane won't be beneficial to the engine or add extra horses or provide "cleaning". If any changes, it may even hurt your mileage.

I think the 'cleanest' gas question can't really be answered ... one thing I learned from this site (from wash 'n wax) is *NEVER* to go fill up when there's a truck refilling the tanks in the ground ... all sorts of crap gets kicked up from the bottom. Turn around if there's a truck at the station and wait for the debris to settle again.

IMHO, I go with Shell Optimax Gold 91 and very happy with my mileage. I do about 60 highway / 40 city miles and go about 9 - 10 L / 100km (25-27 mpg).

Lastly ... Canadian gas adds MMT to improve fuel economy (at the expense of destroying your catalytic converter). We are stuck putting it in all our fuel 'cause of some agreement with a US firm. (that's what i remember watching on CBC a couple years back)

I find it interesting that higher octane fuels are readily available in some regions and not sold at all in other regions. In canada you mostly choose between 92 and 91 octane, while in the SE US all the brands carry 93 octane as their premium. I use Amoco premium (white gas) now sold at BP. I believe its the cleanest you can get. Doesn't help you in Canada tho....

And how much $$$ is the booster vs. buying the good grade of gas anyway??

is there a big difference between 92 - 93 - 94 octane gasoline? i use 93 all the time but one of my buddies has an EVO VIII and only uses 94. he says it is so much better than 93. what is one octane gonna do better besides empty your wallet faster?

The higher octane gas has a higher resistance to ignition (thus pre-ignition) but when it does it burns a little faster.
