CL Sales plummet!
American Honda just sent me some stats on sales for the divisions:
Acura had a record YTD - up 25.9% from the previous high in 1991! Total YTD sales were 69,449.
TL sales were up 4.2% YTD, at 29,459 units. CL YTD down -4.7%.
Very interesting is softness of May sales. TL was only down 3.2% for May at 5606, but the CL took a huge hit, down 32.7% to 1691.
YTD sales of the NSX were 82 cars, down 30.5% from 200.
Honda also posted record YTD sales of 491, 806!

as much as i love the CL-S, they really need to do somthing to it. They better not put the 6-speed in the TL-S cuz that would be just dumb. Hell i love my TL-S and i think they shouldnt have even made that if they wanted the CL sales. oh well im not Honda!!

There is nothing wrong with CL's sales.
Last May, CL just launched. It was probably one of the best selling month.
This may, it's the end of a very long model year. Until Acura is ready to create some incentive to move the old inventory, potential CL buyers will be looking forward to the 2002 model.
So that's not a bad decline at all comparing the best logical month to the worst logical month.

You really need to look at the entire vehicle sales market to appreciate a significant drop in ANY car's sales when you see it. I'm not quite sure of the figures, but everything I ever read or hear about suggests that NOW is the best time to purchase a vehicle. I believe the drop in sales is industry-wide. Perhaps the TL-S sales have stunted the CL/P/S sales slightly.

No doubt about it, the TLS has canibilazied CLS sales. Given that the CLS does not handle noticeably better than the TLS, is a 2 door, doesn't look as nice (my opinion), and is likely to have a much lower resale value ... why would anyone buy a CLS over a TLS .

Maybe some people don't want the 4 doors...

- the 2 door market
- the 4 door market.
- the it doesn't matter how many doors market.
The first two markets probably make up 90% of sales. Most people know which one they want.
The 4 door vastly outsells the 2 door. The Type S package may be important to most people on an internet enthusiast forum, but not for the general market for this car. The CL-S likely stole *** a few *** TL sales because it was released first. Likewise, if the TL-S had been released first it may have stolen a few CL-S sales. But overall these numbers are small.

I remember reading an one of the previews(can't remember, but it's either MT or C&D)saying that TL-S corner more stable than CL-S due to its longer wheelbase...
As for drop in sells of CL-S, I would have to agree that many potential buyers would wait for 2002, as 2002 models aren't that far away..
