Chip

Yesterday my friend got his 02 Jetta 1.8t chipped. I don't think I need to say anymore about it. I did a search about a chip for the TLS and a few people mentioned that they were in production. Does anyone know the status of that? Is it out or coming out soon?

It's not out yet and I bet nothing (meaning info, not product) until at least September...There was a blurb on a-cl about it, but it is still being tested...

Here:

there already is a piggy back ecu... the unichip... but it is extremely expensive (like more than $1k for the chip and to tune it). some people have used the UR pullies and gotten gains, but if you get these, you wont be able to run a system... like an amo and subwoofers and tv's and stuf like that as it underdrives the alternator. but if u dont have any electrical mods and dont plan on doing any... then they would be safe to use.

Thats what he said, so maybe it is out

the price just won't warrant the gains you will see from any kind of chip unless your car is extensively tuned (as tuned as the TL-S can be). Gains will probably range anywhere from 4-10 whp (max) and this is probably being a bit optomistic. The 1.8T engines for both Audi's and VW's since they are essentially the same engine are very tunable and a chip upgrade is one of the best you can do since it comes FI from the factory. On most naturally aspirated applications you will not see the same amount of results and the $/hp ratio will be significantly higher. IMHO save your money and look elsewhere for power or maybe consider getting the V-AFC if you really need something.

Hopefully Juniorbean will chime in here. I believe he knows several people who got the unichip. However, none of them saw any increase in WHP and a couple actually lost some.

I am no expert, and again, a-cl has all of this stuff, but the term 'unichip' is being used generically in this conversation...It will be a piggy-back ECU type deal, but specific to the car. The issue str8 is talking about now is generic to the car, hence little gain...

It is not a chip like what you see with JET or in this case, the Jetta...The goal is to get it in the 25whp range, but it is the torque gains that will be most beneficial. No price yet, but the general thoughts are that it will be pricey--likely around $750 or so...

Again, all is in r&d and nothing is set in stone...

Here I am

There were a couple of people from ACL.com a while back that got chips and saw a small increase in hp (no more then 5hp), but actually lost torque.

Those people were actually not using the unichip.. they were using the JetChip. That was some time back and I believe that JetChip no longer has an application for us.

Comptech is coming out with a piggyback ECU that will get you up to 20hp.. but those gains will only be seen when used with a supercharger.

As r10apple mentioned.. one of the guy on ACL is getting a piggy back ECU made, however, it's still in the testing/tuning stage... and probably won't be out for a while....

I wonder if this Comptech Piggyback ECU will give more noticable gains on the low end or the high end?

galfert, it will be COMBINED ONLY with the Supercharger kit they sell and is not a separate item...
Since the s/c is providing power across the power band, it is reasonable the ECU will also allow more power across the same range.
