Check Engine Light + TCS Light (Constant Problem)

I have a '99 TL w/ 73K and last year my check engine light & TCS light went on...I came to this forum and solved the problem by simply removing the fuse for the clock and putting it back in...

This problem has happened at least 3 times in the past year...& I can solve it by simply removing the fuse for the clock and putting it back in, but i'm wondering why is this happening? Is there some underlying problem that I don't know about and the remove/insert clock fuse is just a temporary fix?

any input would be great

the first step would be to pull the code when your check engine light is on. Autozone will do this for free. Then it will be easier to narrow down your problem

^ Exactly. Next time its on get the codes read. When those lights com on it means the ECU is reading that something is wrong. Its designed to get the owner to get the car fixed. Get the codes read and we can help you figure out how to fix it from there

No not always. the TCS light actually is programmed to come on with alot of things that trigger the CEL

Code: P1491
Definition: EGR Valve Lift Insufficient Detected
Probable Causes: 1-Poor Electrical Connection 2-Failed EGR Valve

What does this mean?

Thanks

Clean your EGR port and EGR. There is a DIY in the DIY thread.

Yea I think I'm 6 months out of warrenty based on the 80K 8Year policy for this recall...hopefully they will clean it out on goodwill & consideration. I'll call my dealership tomorrow & bring it in.

o how i hate acura....i call them up today and my car is 6 months out of the extended warrenty for clogged egr valve...i ask him about doing it under goodwill and he said it was based on the maintenance of your car and since my timing belt needs to be changed he would do that and clean the egr valve at no charge...of course the timing belt to be changed is $900!!! So now I don't know what to do....I'm probably going to wind up paying just for the EGR vavle (1.5 hrs labor) and then change the timing belt through my mechanic when it desperatly needs to be changed.

Why do you hate acura? Just because your past warranty and they wont cover it?? That makes sense. Sorry to say, but its YOUR fault for not taking care of it when it first happened and not acura for not good willing you.

Just do it yourself. Its not hard and on a scale of 10 its a 1.5. Its easier to do than changing plugs.

Not to be a ass, but it is your fault. If you reset the light and it came back (and you proceeded to reset it many times) that would have been a BIG indicator that something was wrong and to not keep resetting it. After it came back on it should have been your cue to get it diagnosed.
Hopefully the dealer gives you good news.

People like you are the ones who kick ass. Even when the problem is really simple and clearly your fault and really don't have much to lose, you pay someone else do it. I did it before my I sold my TL and it was simple. By the way I'm a computer nerd not a mechanic.

But here is a question that just popped into my head. Why did you come in here trying to get help when you were not going to try to fix it yourself? fsttyms1 was kind and directed you to step by step DIY and then just blow him off. Not only did you waste his time but ignored his helpful advice.

i had the same problem as you, you need to make sure whoever fixes the EGR valve knows WTF they are doing. I had mine fixed by my dealer friend 3 times, spent over 500 bux, still no luck, TCS and EGR would still come on. I finally took it to Acura and after the fixed the EGR, i never saw the engine light or TCS again, plus they warrantied their work.

Last time I checked, OBII code reads were free. at Acura and at Autozone. Why not take it in for that the first time around? and if it is something you know, or have an inkling of an idea that it might be under warranty, take it in.

THEN, if the dealer tells you to screw off, come back here, and figure out a way to fix it.

This way you don't waste another persons valuable time for your SOUGHT after advice.

Well, I have taken mine to both places for free. If not the dealer than try autozone, they usually let you borrow specialty tools (like code readers) if you have your drivers license.

I took mine into the dealer because of a trouble light, they ran the code and then left me at the option to buy the new part or drive away. Don't know why they wouldn't do the same.

Might have also been because I had just finished forking over a grand for a new rear windshield the week before???
