Changing the oil yourself?

Who does their own oil and filter changes? How difficult is it?

I DO. I DO.

very eazy,17mm wrench, and a strong hand for the filter. thats it.
make sure the filter o-ring comes off w/the old filter,oil-up the new filter gasket. hand tighten it and fill her up with 4.6qts of your favorite earl. Unless your a really good aim you'll need a funnel to filler up.

Best part of changing your own is that you can use SYNTHETIC oil.

yeah, it's not rocketscience. Drain plug and filter are pretty close to each other. Filter is at a weird angle (depending on what car comparing too), but not to bad. If you have ramps, it'll make your life a lot easier.

I do my own also....

For some reason I feel better if I do things myself because I know they were done correctly and I know the products that I'm using....

I always feel like mechanics and dealers just put in the cheapest stuff on or in your car, so they can reap a bigger profit...

If you can't do it on your blacktop driveway and you don't have ramps, I suggest you drive the front passenger side up a curb to give you some clearance. Of course this would depend on how your curb/driveway is set up...

The dealer will put SYNTHETIC OIL in for you.
They will use what they have & charge you an arm with 2 legs or you can bring your own oil. My last oil change 3 weeks ago I had them put in my own MOBIL 1.

why cant you use the ramps on blacktop? they shouldn hurt it. ive used ramps many of times on blacktop with out a problem. other wise you can take a piece of ply wood a little longer (tire-ramp side)than the ramps (same width) and fasten them to the plywood... or you can buy the solid plastic ramps

i was thinking about the plastic ramps, do they work well? I have the metal ramps which have sharp edges, and they sink into the blacktop.. I used a jack a long time ago in my uncle's blacktop and that too sinked in a few inches after like 10 mins...

HOw much do they plastic ones cost??

I also change my own oil. Since my car is lowered, I have to drive it onto a 4x4 piece of plywood so I can get enough ground clearance to jack it up. Then it is smooth sailing from there.
