Changing to Amsoil

Just placed my order for 6 quarts of 5W30 full synthetic Amsoil and a SDF20 filter.

This is the first time I will shoot for the extended drain interval of 25,000 miles... I kind of weary about this.. anyone have any experiences with Amsoil and Honda motors?

I plan on changing the filter every 3 months rather than every 6 and analyze the oil every 6 months.. i average about 2,000 miles per month... probably about 60% hwy and 40% city or thereabouts.

I don't abuse the motor.. but I do like to get into the VTEC range...

What do you guys think? Any input us would be helpful to put my mind @ wase

Regards

Matt

How do you change the filter without draining the oil? I'm asking because I heard good stuff about Amsoil from other forums, but how does that filter vs. oil drain work?

Just take out the oil filter and replace it w/ a new one. Start your car to let the oil cycle through the filter. Turn ur car off and top off the oil to the oil stick line. Very simple.

I'm using Amsoil 5w-30 w/ Mobil 1 M1-105 filter. I'm on the second filter w/ the current oil interval.

Re: Changing to Amsoil

Per Lab tests from Blackstone labs, Amsoil will only last about 8-10k of miles AT THE MOST with mixed driving before it starts to not protect as well. The results are here:

Why do our motors break the oil down so fast? The only difference between myself and those in the oil analysis test group is that I would be changing to Amsoil with only about 3,500 miles on the car. Would this make a difference? If not... then what is the point of using Amsoil if you don;t get the full 25,000 miles out of it? False advertising? Something doesn't seem right.

To answer the question of how to cahnge the filter w/o draining the oil... this is possible because the filter is above the oil pan and is mounted vertical.. so just unscrew it and top off the oil.

You might want to poke a hole in the filter to let it drain before you unscrew it... also makes it easier to catch some oil for the analysis kit... not really sure if it makes a difference if you take the oil from the inner part of the element or the outer part for the test!?

You should be, I pushed redline 5w20 to almost 8000 miles and I won't be waiting that long next time. I would stick to somewhere around 7000-7500 drains IMO from the results I have seen posted.

I switched to Amsoil and a Mobil-1 filter as well. I didn't read the earlier link, but I do know that the 5w-20 and 5w-30 Amsoil oils are very different. The 5w-30 (according to Amsoil) has a much longer drain interval (more than twoce as long) than the 5w-20.

Personally, if you're going for extended drain intervals I wouldn't recommend an arbitrary mileage limit. I'd rather see you test your oil more often and go by the test results.

I'm planning on changing every 5k miles (WELL short of the oil's expected service life), but I may extend that later.

If you can't have confidence in the oils life expactancy.. then what's the use? They boast how much $$$ you'll save.. but @$19 a clip for the oil analysis you really arent saving much.. it is almost more of a hassle.

I'm starting to wonder if I should have not stuck with the Mobil1 and Honda filter configuration I was planning on using and changing the oil every 4,ooo miles (every 2 months)

The oil is a little cheaper and saves me the trouble of testing it.

I guess I'll see how things pan out.

Hey guys, due to my job I have 118K miles on my TL and have been using Mobil 1 and changing it every 5K. Between changes it still uses none. Car is a tight as ever, feels just as fast as when it was new. But I'm going to switch to Amsoil or Redline and go to 7500 mile changes as the oil will make it. The recent threads about Mobil 1 made me lose some confidence.

People will say go for 25K miles, but not me. I like knowing the oil in my car is relatively clean, the cost is secondary. My goal is 300K and then I'll get a new TL. Just my two cents worth.

what intervals are you changing the 0w30? The questions till remains... why do our engines eat up oil so quickly.. if Amsoil advertises that they can go 25k w/o an oil change.. then why are our motors different?

If I remember correctly 5w30 has the large drain numbers (25k) while the 5w20 is much much less even from Amsoil.

right.. the 5w20 has shorter drain intervals.. but I am running 5w30... why are people saying that it only lasts like 8,000 miles before it needs to be changed?

I've been using Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 oil filters for the past few oil changes. I'm now using Mobile 1 SuperSyn 5W30 but am thinking about switching to Amsoil. Has anyone compared the Mobil 1 with SuperSyn to Amsoil? Which is better?

I like the Mobil 1 oil filters, but am looking for a replacement since they now cost $12-14/each. What's the best oil filter for our TL that cost less than $10.
