catalytic converter
Ive already did a search and found just one thread with info on it and a link but its a link for a converter for a 96
i have a 99 tl and i need to get the converter replacedto pass emmisions.
is this something relatively simple that my mechanic can replace because i do not have 1150 to get one installed at the dealer?
can someone provide me with a link of a good site to order the part and give me a an estimate on labor time and cost of labor?

My dealer quoted $1400. I found some posts here that mentioned MagnaFlow, DynaMax or RandomTechnology cats that fit the TL and cost less than $200. But no one's posted the particular model number. Can anyone whose actually got one post the model for us? Thanks.

Also, if you wanted to browse around, their webpage is http://www.randomtechnology.com/index.html
Just an FYI, if you don't see it on their webpage, it doesn't mean they don't offer it. I got my 3" I/O dia. cat-con for my Talon through them, great product!!

Since you didn't answer my question, I'll post this anyway as an FYI for all you folks.
Your cat is covered under a 8 yr/80,000 mile warrenty by the Federal Government. This has happened to both my mom on her Maxima and my brothers 323is where the cats went before 80k miles and they were replaced for free at the dealer. Don't pay for it and get ripped off.

Also, I think you can still pass emisions without a cat. They just have to see it. Are you throwing a code or something? If your check engine light is one, then just clear the codes right before you go into get emissions and you should pass. I say this because I know a few guys that put a test pipe on and still pass emissions. The only thing is that you have to find someone that doesn't bother checking for the cat with that mirror.
my dealer replaced my cat convertor under federal emissions warranty. every car should be covered with it til 80,000 miles. i didnt have to pay one penny. just that i had to leave my car there for a day and that was it. they even gave me a loaner car.

This is a reply I got from Random Technology:
"As far as I know, the converter on your TL is dimensionally the same as the one used on

Can anyone with the spec knowledge verify that? I wonder how many of us need one here and maybe get a group discount with them?

Is anyone interested in getting one? Random Technology doesn't do group buys, but Lightning Motosports does. From Random Technology it's $242 + shipping. LM is $229.17 + shipping (around $12). Possible discount for multiple orders. He wouldn't give me an estimate without a firm number of orders. More info of the cat can be found at www.randomtechnology.com
Instead of posting another thread about the same thing, imma ask it here. I just replace my cat with and aftermarket cat. Everything bolts and plugs right up but, the check engine light is still on. Just because it's a aftermarket does it mean it will throw the light on or do I have to buy the acura cat to make it not throw in the light? Thanks
You'd have to reset the check engine light to get rid of it. Autozone has testers & will do that for free. I bought their $150 one & it works great if you are looking to buy one. It only shows you current codes that flag the check engine light though - there are other OBDII testers that will show you everything the engine is doing & thinking (more $$).
To reply to the group buy post....I'm interested if it's a bolt-in cat. If it's a universal that requires me to cut pipe & clamp it on, I'm not interested. I couldn't tell from their web page. Did you ask them if it's a bolt in?

Keep in mind that those of you in California with a car made in 1996 or after are not able to get aftermarket cats...sorry thats emissions rules. Good luck finding a shop that will install them also. If you are not in california check your local emissions laws regrading the replacement of the cats. Magnaflow (Carsound) makes a good quality hi-flow cat...stay away from catco or other shitty names like that...chances are you wont pass the smog check. Laws vary from state to state, California is the toughest to pass in so what i know might not be applicable for your situation. the carsound aftermarket cats run about 165 list....though i am sure you can find them for cheaper since wholesale on them is 33 bucks.
