Car and Driver 10 Best

Stopped by a local pharmacy and was reading the new car and driver. I only glanced but I saw that it said the TL-S was the quietest car they've tested this past year. Would tend to think it would be the LS430, or S Class, but like I said, I only glanced so I may have read it wrong. If that is true though I am very suprised.

Yup, it's true! I have that issue of C&D. At 70 mph, the interior sound level is 62 dBA.

62dBA at 70MPH! That must be a typo by Car and Driver. Car and Driver did a "Preview" in March 01 and a "Short Take" in July 01 on the Type-S but no interior noise data was provided. Road & Track provided the following interior noise for a Type-S:

Idle in Neutral - 49dBA
Maximum in 1st gear - 73 dBA
Constant 50mph - 69 dBA
70mph - 73 dBA

i actually think THAT is a typo.

how can the max in first gear (probably above 5k rpm) be as loud as constant 70mph, which would probably be right at 2k rpm?

Test results for my S-Class at 62mph steady is about 62 (lowest back in 1992)and TLS is significantly louder than that on roads less than perfect....

I think if we switch our 17'' tires to 15'', it would be very quiet at 60mph or more. Am I right?

As I posted previously, this is an absolutely meaningless stat. The spectrum of frequencies has to be analyzed. An SPL meter only will register the highest amplitude at any frequency. I promise you that 62 dB at 20 Hz is barely audible or sensed, while 62 dB at 400 Hz will be much more noticeable.

I used my portable spectrum analyzer and could not confirm the 62 dB reading, and the spectra showed numerous peaks in the most irritating band, 500-1000 Hz where our aural acuity is highest (because our heads are 6" wide, or 1/2 wavelength of a 1100 Hz tone). (Wavelength is computed by taking the speed of sound in ft/sec and dividing by the frequency: 1067 ft/sec / 1000 = 1.067 ft = 12 inches = 6" half-wavelength.

All i know is this: My moms 2001 Camry is a hell of a lot quieter then my TL-S on the freeway (10W between 4th street and Central in the #2 Lane) at 75 mph. THis is a fact as I have driven both cars over this stretch of road several times and paid close attention to the noise. And, the wind noise in the TL-S is much worse. But whos complaining. The TL-S is a bad ass car and I love mine.

Wow, very imprissive this analysis. Good job!

no way it's the quiestest car...

i have test drove the new 02 Camry XLE V6 before i bought a TL, and the Camry is A LOT quieter than the TL...at any speed...

what is the drag coefficency for TL?
Camry is 0.28cd
LS430 is 0.26cd

I've had a few Camrys (Avis) on my buisness trips (1000 miles in 5 days everytime). Ive also done the runs with my TLs. The TLS is a LOT quiter then a Camry in every way. Use my CRV in the winter.. now that is one dam loud car to drive, I hate it.

now u r talking about RENTAL cars...no offense...but i realle hate ppl to judge a car by driving a RENTAL!!! those cars' conditions are bad...
can't compare at all with your own car!!! and remember those Camry are only 4 cylinders engine...
so of coz it's louder than a V6 TL...

ride on a lexus ES300 or Camry XLE V6 and u will know the new definition of QUIET!!!

I think it's 0.31 for TL.... and I agree, Camry is alot quieter...

Rental cars are no comparison. People beat the crap out of their rental cars. My moms 01 camry is a V6, and it IS MUCH quieter on the freeway. Not so much on the streets but once freeway speeds are reached, the TL-S is noticeably louder.

1) the rental cars I get from Avis usually have under 3,000 miles on them. Beat on, maybe, but doubt it.

2) Why would a rental car be louder then a non rental car?

3) the Camrys I have driven in are louder then my stock TLs period.

4) My car with 18" rims and ZR tires is louder now.

It should of said "minus the sunroof and seatbelt squeaks, the TL-S is the most quiet"!

I can tell you one thing.....I would never buy a rental car. I know how I am when I get them. I beat the sh!t out of them.

Maybe when you get the rental cars it just happens that you get the new ones.

I posted the following noise level for the Type-S earlier from
The 2002 Ultimate Buyers Guide by AutoWeek:
Idle: 41
Full Throttle: 72
Steady 60 mph: 65

The following numbers are from Car & Driver in December 01 on the 02 Camry SE V-6:
Idle: 37
Full Throttle: 70
70-mph cruising: 67
70-mile coasting: 67

With a 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds and 1/4 mile time of 16.4. Toyota wants to build a smooth, quiet, comfy Camry. I don't think Toyota build this new 02 Camry with performance in mind.

Unless of course it portrays Lexus in the best light possible

I would have to guess the TL is significantly quieter than the TL-S. The suspension is softer, it has touring tires, quieter exhaust, etc...

Funny Web, but you know I don't really quote mags word for word, they give us a general idea to use though!

I agree with you and why the tl is quieter than the tl-s, makes much sense.

Your quoting 2 different magazines whom have probably compared the car on 2 completely different roads and conditions (and test methods). I would believe this more if you took them from the same source but this is completely invalid.

In my experience, the noise from my TLS is all over the boards. Depends on the road surface, cross winds, etc. I've not experienced a quieter car that the TLS when all conditions are right. However, I've also noticed a lot of noise when the conditions are wrong. I think the biggest culprit is the tires, and I suspect that the door seals might contribute when conditions are right.

Y2KS2K,
I posted the information from two magazines, just to let people see what is out there. I have owned the following vehicles: LS400, Avalon, Maxima GXE, Maxima SE. I can tell you that my Type-S is NOT the most quiet vehicles that I owned but I bought it because its superb performance and value for 30K. I didn't ask the people in this forum to believe everything in a magazine.

well...3000miles is a lot already for a rental cars...my friends..oh..and myself will try to push the car to the limit if i am driving a rental...since it's not my car...y not have some fun with it? take a 180 turn with hand brake on...hold the gear to the redline...etc etc...since most ppl do that, the car is LOUDER than a ur own car...coz u won't do that to ur own car...

also 18in rims is larger so there's less sound isolated from the thin sidewall of the tires...and using ZR rated is louder because those tires are using harder rubber compound for maximum spd...

got it??? so don't compare a 4 CYLINDER CAMRY RENTAL to ur own TL in ur garage.

Cool

There is NO way that the TL-S is even CLOSE to the LS430. When you are in the LS430, you can't hear anything outside. This is the quietest car I have ever driven.
