car accelerating on its own

Ok, so as the title says, driving to work today the car most of the time wanted to drive by itself. No crusie control was on or anything, but i could sit there with my foot off the gas, car in 3rd gear and it would hold a steady spead. At a stop light the car was idling above 1100rpm, fully warmed up, letting my foot of the break and the car would accelerate by itself.

If i had the car in 4th, and accelerated lightly then took my foot of the gas it would stay at the rpm it was at, then drop dramatticly, then come back up to a normal rpm for the given speed and gear.

By the time i got to work , it seemed alright, about 15-20 mins, all city driving no highway, so max speed was about 40.

My question is, does this mean my tranny is about to go, or is there something else wrong with the car. Just had the dealer clean the throttle body casue the gas peddle was sticking a lot especially on a cold start. This was about 2 weeks ago and after they cleaned it, the peddle was back to normal and everything seemed fine. Got about 42,xxx on the clock.

Not positive but it could your IAC(idle air control) valve acting up. It is at the bottom of your TB and could cause erratic idle speed which is what it sounds like you are having. doesn't sound like a tranny problem. You should bring it back to the dealer and have them check it out and if it is the IAC valve just buy the part yourself and replace it, very easy DIY, part costs about 150-175.

Its not the tranny. The tranny wouldnt make the RPM raise at idle. It sounds like the idle was high like the throttle was slightly stuck or not closing all the way.

Usually the IAC will produce a erattic idle where teh rpms jump up and down repeatedly. I would keep a eye on it and if it continues bring it back to the dealer or call them to see what they say

Thats guys, i'll keep an eye on. Hopefully the IAC is covered under the extended warrenty. My dealer is usualy good at convering most things, they didn't charge me anything for cleaning the throttle body out last time i had it in for an oil change.

Check the throttle body cable and butterfly if it's moving freely . It look like
you have the throttle body stuck a bit . Grease it and test it . I would complain
to the dealer 'cause after their cleaning then you have this problem

Keep us posted...

The same thing happened to me *exactly once* Scared me shitless. I had to throw it in neutral to stop the car from moving forward. After that one time it never happened again. That was about 18mo ago.

Good luck...

My Bring it back to the dealer and tell them what happend. That way its less likely that you will have to worry about it.
