recently though, Check Engine and TCS come on together, I don't notice the D4 light flashing though. the thing is, when I turn the engine off, TCS light extinguishes (goes out) and the Check Engine light stays on. My tranny is acting a bit rough since that has happened, but not enough to be concerned. I don't know about Hondas/Acuras anymore, I mean, I went through 1 Alternator (105 amp one) under warranty, numerous Check Engine and SRS light issues that get reset and a failed passenger OPDS (occupant position detection sensor-used to decide whether side airbag in seat should come out or not).
I have received a free warranty extension letter from Honda, good until 160000km (100000mi). It remains to be seen whether or not I will buy another Honda eventhough this car handles better than many out there and goes too quick too fast with I & E mods.

2003 TL-P with 12,500 KM on my car so far...... No problems yet. My dealer was telling me that they have replaced only one trannie in all the cars in Saskatoon. There are 62 TL's in the city from 1999 to 2003 and only one has had a new tranny put into it. That is only less then 2%, which kinda sounds good. They did replace one other tranny in a 2002 TL-S that was going from Toronto to Vancouver, when tranny went from D5 to D2 while on the highway outside of S'toon. Poor guy on holidays and his tranny blows apart. Pretty good record for trannies here......
Cheers....

Picked up my 03 Type-S from D/T Acura in Toronto last July. Before I signed for it, I mentioned to the sales manager about the tranny problems and warranty extensions on US Acuras. (Also showed him a copy of the Acura memo). He assured me that my car is not on the list of VINs affected and that I am entitled to the extended 7 Yr/ 160,000 warranty on the powertrain as indicated on ther service computer system.
With about 5,000 kms, I'm having problems with the rotors now. I think I'll show up with the rotor TSB and see what they would do.

Tranny and gas milage is poor
I bought a used 99 TL last week, tranny is slipping and gas milage is poor. Filled up with premium and after about 104KM city driving I am at half tank. The car overal is amazing I love the TL. What are the common problems to these cars other the the major tranny problems. what can I do for the gas consumption to be better. Is it an O2 sensor problem causing the computer to make inacurate mesures for fuel air mixtures. Any help would be great.
Peace.

Jeez that's too much on gas. My Type-S does about 220kms on a half a tank, and mixed city/ highway. Maybe change your O2 sensor and plugs and wires and see if that improves the gas mileage.

Can someone recommend a good local service shop in toronto area? I need to change my front and rear pads and rotors very soon. It's going to cost me alot if done by dealer. Thanks in advance

Hi all,
Major problems with TL: Tranny, rotors warping, some Canadian owners reported bad ball joints, all covered under warranty.
Recommendation for poor gas mileage:
Keep tires slightly overinflated (emphasis on slightly).
Try a K & N air filter (easy to replace)
Use synthetic motor oil (I use Amsoil, guaranteed for 25,000 miles between changes).

About 56,000km, getting a new tranny as I write... In retrospect, should've seen it earlier, but was not aware of any issues, and just took the hard shifts as a fact of life between 3rd&4th.
Will see how long the next one lasts...

Hey guys,
I recently purchased my 99TL here in Toronto and am at about 68000km. I am a little concerned to hear about all of the problems are having with their transmissions and rotors. I read that some of you have been recieving free extended warranties and was wondering how you get one. Do you have to contact Acura directly? Are there certain qualifications? Thanks for any help.

Hi all,
Just bought a 2000 TL with 80km about two weeks ago.
Seller told me that he hadn't encontered any problems except
for paint chipping on the hood in 2002.
Ask the dealer once in possesion of the car for the repair history of the car.
Kind of another story.....
Brakes problems at 28km, 31km, 48km.
New Ball joint at 66km.
New transmission at 76km.
New catalysor also at 76km.
New Short block & Head set at 79km.
By luck i did pay him to buy the extended warranty for a total of 7years/160,000km...
(I didn't buy it myself because it's giving me a better coverage and
a smaller deductible that way)
I hope i will be more lucky
At least it shouldn't cost me too much because of the warranty.:worship:

Tranny #1 on its way out.
Hi all,
At 120k KM, my Engine malf./TCS light combo came on, and my car is really shifting poorly into 3rd gear and higher. The TCS light did shut off after I shut the car down and restarted it, but the Engine malfunction light has stayed on.
It goes into Markham Acura on Wednesday (if not sooner).
As an aside, Markham Acura has been quite good to me (much better than the TL ) so far, and have told me that if I'm not comfortable driving TL until Wednesday, to bring it in tomorrow, and they will get me into a loaner right away...

Hi Marko,
I have a 2000 TL/P.
I bought the car in August with 83k KM on it.
Since buying it, I have have the SRS computer fail and be replaced, followed by the Driver side SRS sensor in the Belt buckle at 105K. Honda Canada covered the cost of the part as this is was out of the warranty, but it was a good will thing. Again, Markham Acura took the initiative to contact Honda Canada to get them to treat me well.
What gets me a little grumpy is that my tranny misshifted a few times during our last cold snap (about 3 weeks ago), and I made and then cancelled appointment to have the tranny checked out, as I didn't want to jump the gun on a tranny problem.
We'll see how this turns out.
Thanks,
Rob.

It looks like Markham dealership is trying to cover investment costs by grabbing as much customers as possible (enjoy it while it lasts). Bad for me they are too far for me to consider them.
In regards to trans, it is hard to be smart. Reading a lot about that topic I came to a conclusion that even replaced one won’t last a long time, now the question is for how many Km is that, even though Honda says that the problem is fixed. That is why from one prospective you would want your trans to be replaced as late as possible (as long as it stays within warranty) if you want to keep this car for a long time. In other hand, you do not want to wait too long once you notice it, because you can get stranded somewhere.
How much did you pay for you TL?

You are correct about the concern that I will have in the future, as I am nearing the end of my warranty range for this car. Maybe I'll trade this one in on a new one .
I picked up my TL for $20k with 83k KM on it.

No problems yet with 67 000 km's on the clock (knock on wood).
AKRY just had his tranny replaced a couple of months ago. Not sure how many km's he had.

I've had my 2002 TL-S for a month now and still loving it except for a few squeaks from the seats and a whine from the rear end. The tranny was replaced at 57,500 km by the previous owner. It now has 79k on it and is running fine. Very smooth shifting in auto or ss mode.

My '02 TL-S had the tranny replaced three weeks ago at mileage 46K km. It only took about two weeks between the tranny started having occasionally funny shifts to complete 3rd gear slipping. Both the PCM and the tranny were replaced.

At Richmond Acura. The service was excellent. The mechanic who test drove my car reported "major slipping in 3rd and 4th gears, car unsave to drive". Even though they were out of service loaners, the service guy managed to find me a loaner car. I dropped the car off on Tuesday morning, and picked up the repaired car on Wednesday evening. I thought it would take weeks for the tranny to come in. The car drives like new, so far. I hope the tranny will last.

Candian 2000 TL
Hello fellow Canadian TL owners,
My 2000 TL has 45,000 kms on it and still has the same transmission. I have no problems with it but more than my share of warped rotors. I had the rotors turned within the 3 year warranty, only to have them fail again outside the comprehensive warranty. When I mentioned the well known rotor TSB, I was universally told that the TSB only applied to U.S. cars. The dealers and Honda Canada maintained this view even after I made it clear I knew that all TLs are built on the same line in Ohio. Strangely, they were prepared to respect the TSBs that related to the seat belt sensor and the defective washer fluid installed at the factory.
I was ultimately able to get Honda Canada to agree to a goodwill repair of my front brakes. I strongly recomend that you speak with Sam Diab at Acura Sherway. He was a great help.
Good luck!

I just broke 84,000 km on my '01 CL-S. No problems and I will be installing the S/C in the next couple weeks. I've taken my car to Burrard Acura since day one. Told my service rep about my concerns about the tranny with the S/C. He said "No problem, I'll take care of you if anything happens"

Zed, I was lazy to write, but in regards to brakes, the same story applies to me. The very same BS I heard when I asked them for brake pads, because I was more then surprised when I figured out that dealer only machined the rotors and did not replace brake pads (which caused rotors to warp). Even when I asked them why do they treat Canadian customers differently, I got an answer that what they did (just machining the rotors without replacing the pads) is an industry standard.
But Zed, I do not quite get you, you write that you have 45K Km now and at the same time you write that your rotors failed again outside the comprehensive warranty??? Could you be more specific? How did you get them to agree to a goodwill repair?

Tranny Update.
Hey all,
Well, tranny has now been replaced...sorry for the late follow up!
I took the car in on The Wednesday morning @ about 7:30AM, and got a call with the verdict by 10:00AM...Transmission failure.
They replaced the Transmission, Tourque Converter, TCM computer, and Fuel Pressure Regulator. The Assistant Service Manager with whom I dealt said that with the later TL's, the computer has been the cause of the transmissions, as it would not shift in the proper ranges, eveltually beating the tranny into submission.
The car was ready for me on Thursday evening, with the only problem being that their computer to reprogram my extra immobilizer keys was locked due to the most recent upodate from Honda...so I had to come in on the following Thursday to get the remaining keys learned.
I got an 04 EL and an RSX for loaners...not bad.
The TL is back and running well.
