well, I would have suggested looking at the belt tensioner, but since you already replaced it nothing else comes to mind. It's possible you got a bad used one. Do you have one of those car stethoscopes? You can get them for under $20 . . especially if you have a Harbor Freight nearby. It can help you isolate the sound.

It could be, or it could be the water pump or power steering or altenator . . a lot of things in that general area, so without being there first hand one can only guess . . . sorry. What the stethoscope will help you with is isolating the sound as you place the pick-up on each of the areas.

The AC compressor bearing could be going out and it would be worse with the AC on. Go to an Autozone of something and many will look at it in hopes of selling a belt or compressor.

it's not the timing belt tensioner. that is hydraulic in doesn't move.my guess is your serpentine belt tensioner. or like other set it might be your ac compressor or your alternator.get a stethoscope and listen to try to locate pinpoint.

the harbor freight tools `mechanics stethascope` is under 5 bucks,,sometimes $2 on sale!

at parts stores expect up to 10 dollars, but its still a needed tool that pinpoints noises, cks for valves out of spec (different noise than the others)
ck any rotating part for bearing issues, and more

The noise went away for two days and came back = chances are you got a bum used unit-- and it came back to bite you
those ac belt tensioners only last 50-80 kmiles anyway,,if you got more be thankful

Not that sort of noise. You'd have problems with how the engine ran . . . and if it was really bad . . it wouldn't run or it would bang up the valves and stop running all together.

My suggestion is to ask someone at Autozone or similar place tell you if you need a new belt, pully or compressor . . . I can only offer an educated guess without looking at it myself.

when you put the pointed tip of the stethascope to the solid suface of the bearing housing--if it sounds like a whirring with constant tone,,,thats good bearing
or it sounds like gravel being crushed,,thats a bad one

mine was so bad at the end--80kmiles,,you could hear it outside the car
