Can I put mid-grade in a TL Type S?

I'm new here so I don't know if this has been discussed before. Is there any reason I cannot put mid-grade fuel in a 2001 Acura Type S? Or for that matter, low grade fuel? I don't "race" the vehicle at all and drive most of the time no more than 65MPH or so. I don't rev the engine and have never red-lined it. What impact would lower grade fuel have on the engine?

You can do mid. You will lose performance but the money you save will not amount to much compared to the money you wasted by buying a TLS instead of a TLP

Welcome on board !!!

I would not recommend any fuel that is lower than 91 octane. Is not a question about "race" or "not race", it is about the way the engine was designed for high compression ratio. If you use anything lower than 91, you will get "ping"s which is really bad for the engine.

Hope this helps.

Cheers !!!

I would do what the manual says. It doesn't save u that much money in the end, only about $3 per full tank. I know with the sky rocketing gas prices in the past 2 wks, it looks bad.

Hmm...I hope he didn't pickup that '01 TL-S that was on eBay a few weeks back.

You know if you have an '01 TL-S all you got was the badge and nothing else right?

It's ok to use <91 octane gas, but with much reduced horsepowers. As mentioned above, one of the drawback of using <91 gas is that the engine will "ping" under heavy loads, such as going up a steep hill fully loaded. But thanks to the Honda engine management system, when the knock sensors detect the "ping"s, the engine computer will retard the ignition timing to the cylinders until no more "ping" is detected. The more the engine ignition timing is retarded, the less the engine output (horsepower and/or torque) is generated.
