calculating gas mileage
calculating gas mileage
Is it the right way to calculate gas mileage? I divide the mileage of that tank by the amount of gas needed to fill up the tank. I noticed my last tank dropped to 16.7 mpg. Just wanna make sure I am counting right? Thanks.
you also need to be consistent in measuring. I use the same pump at the same gas station, fill it up to the first click (stops automatically), let the gas settle in my tank (5 seconds) then level it with the 2nd click. Reset your guage. I am getting 26mpg on mix driving. I was getting 22-24mpg till the engine broke-in (mine was at 15,000 miles). Oh it helps if you leave your lead foot at home too.

Yeah, I'm another "anal" one I guess! My spreadsheet is exactly like yours Acura3200, with a graph just like daverman. And then, since it's a lease, I have another sheet which breaks down my monthly and annual mileage allotments and let's me know how I'm doing against my mileage cap. And then, just for kicks, I have a breakdown of the date that I hit every 1,000 miles to calculate the number of days it took me to drive the previous 1k. I just hit 4000 today and it took me only 22 days from 3000!
But, I guess I'm a lead foot, because the best gas mileage I've seen for any given tank is 22 mpg!
I've read about some of you getting 25-26 per tank. Although I do a fair amount of city driving, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Routinely I get 26 mpg. On vacations (> 250 miles) I usually get 29.6 mpg. I almost never drive < 75 on the highway (unless the valentine 1 catches a cop...).
All I've been using is Texaco 94 octane...

I, like you, also keep a log at every fill-up. However, what's important to me is not miles per $$, but miles per gallon. The whole reason to keep the log in the first place is to get an indication of WHEN something is starting to go wrong with the car (ie. decrease in mpg).
With a difference of 10 cents per gallon between 89 octane and 94 octane (only choice I have a texaco), It doesn't break the bank to spend the extra $1.70 once a week.....

Does that mean there is something wrong with my car? I am consistently getting 18-19mpg, mine is at 15000 now. I am suspecting the tranny is slipping or my alignment is off bad enough to affect the mileage. Any thought?
I think I'm sticking with EXXON (no amocos, etc. around here...)
I've been getting good mileage -- the first two are from my trip back from Alabama -- the remainder are City/Highway mix - 90% highway -- and im shocked cuz its with a pretty heavy foot at times

About the gauge reset button. One question. What does that gauge measure anyways? I couldnt figure it out. To measure my milieage, I divide my 13,653 miles and with 12 gallons of gas i use right? i get 1137.75??? whats that mean? did i do it right?
