CAI: Bad for the engine?
After just purchasing my 2003 TL-S from Erin Mills Acura, the dealer and I got into a discussion regarding modifications to the car. I expressed an interest in putting on a Comptech CAI system at which point he told me that such a device is not good for the engine in both summer/winter. Now.... I can... to a small degree understand why he would say winter... but summer? Does anyone know if the instalation of a CAI does ANYTHING negitive to the engine? Reliability is the most important issue to me... so therefore, if it does affect engine life... I will not install it. Please let me know what you think.
it isnt bad for the car either summer or winter. it will give you hp but it wont hurt your engine unless its neglicted, at which point you would probably get the same negitave effects as the factory filter if it was neglicted
Thank you for the post.
Yeah, I thought he was wrong. I know quite a few people with a CAI system that leave it on in the winter. I have a question for you fsttyms1, when you use the term "neglected" what is it that you mean? I assume you are referring to changing the filter every 20k miles?? Speaking of which, that is one major downfall of the Comptech CAI.... supposedly it is a b*tch to change... maybe I should go with an AEM V2?

yea by neglected i mean never cleaning or changing.
but with the AEM and i believe the ICEBOX too, you dont have to replace the filter, just clean. the icebox is alot easer to clean than the aem CAI

Without an air by-pass valve there may be a possibility of engine damage if water is allowed in the intake. I guess if you get the valve you have very little to worry about.
Besides, dealer mechanics usually aren't experts on after market parts. Of course unless you can buy and install them at the dealer.

so obviously its bad to let CAI (with no airbypass valve) to be submerged in a puddle but my question is what if water just gets splashed on the filter (since under the bumper, plastic has a bunch of holes and first time i drove in the rain and then opened my hood i saw filter being wet a little bit... soo is that just as bad as being fully submerged?
