Burning smell... and some smoke....

Okay... I don't know what's going on... but lately... when I "gun it" off the light... suppose... I do it twice in a row... (two stop lights), I get this burning smell... and on one occasion... smoke came out from the right side of the hood!!! BUT yet... the temp. gauge showed normal temp... Have any of you guys experience this?

could it be your brake rotors??? on occassion if I really pound on my car, the brakes will start to smoke due to them being excessively hot...but gunning the car twice shouldn't warrant that...get it checked out...

But wouldn't that be from excessive breaking? Cause I'm NOT...

Did you recently get a oil change? Some oil probably just got splashed around your engine somewhere..

oil will smoke when it hits the engine, but will burn away almost instantly. If you are getting smoke when/after gunning it, it might be a leak that is splashing/leaking fluid (oil I'd bet) on to the engine.

Check your fluid levels ASAP, but probably is a leak in a hose.

I was talking to another member yesterday about putting steel braided hoses in the entire engine. there was a kit for our cars that would replace everything except the A/C hose. It was also under 100CAD if I remember right.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Would that be a smart upgrade if there was a leakin' hose?

that'd be good if you need to replace the hose anyway, otherwise IMO it's a lot of work (e.g. mechanic money) to drain fluids and replace hoses especailly since not all hoses are really under high pressure.

plus, steel braided hoses will also leak eventually...they're still rubber underneath

Could be a lot of things. Could be oil, waterpump, over full radiator reservoir, power steering leak.

Is there any kind of smell that you can tell? That would help track it down.

Don't know if you have aftermarket headers, but if you do could there be a leak in one of them? (i.e. Is the car louder than normal?)

If its a strong exhaust smell its from your catalic converter being overwhellmed by the amount of exhaust coming through so its not burning it up. you know if you are behind someone when the get on the highway and get on it, you smell that carbon smell? well thats from too much exhaust for the cat to clean up, so when you do this a few times and you stop, that smell is still around. the smoke on the other hand??? who the hell knows.
